ARCTIC sea ice shrank to its second-lowest level ever, US scientists said yesterday, with particular melting in the Chukchi Sea, where polar bears were recently seen swimming far off the Alaskan coast.
This year's Arctic ice melt could surpass the 2007 record low in the coming weeks.

The statement about the "second-lowest level ever" begs the question, when did "ever" begin? Is that "ever" since they decided to start making measurements a few years ago, or "ever" since the planet first formed. If the latter, who was doing the measuring then?

Official records only began about a quarter of a century ago with large scale areal surveying based on satellite photography.

However, there are newspaper articles from 1922 and 1967 which posited the possible complete disappearance of Arctic Ice due to high rates of summer melt. Thereafter, both times, the ice returned in depth. I'm away for a few days from now; if this article is still open for comments when I get back I'll look back through my notes to give fuller references.

My understanding is that tour guides in Churchill tell tourists that this is a cyclical phenomenon which is well-known locally and has been observed several times since Europeans settled in the area.

Some of the reading I've done suggests that the Arctic may well not have been totally ice-free since the end of the Cretaceous when the world was totally ice-free.

Absolutely finally, I'm really not having a good day.

The Monthly Weather Review article was published in September 1933 but is classed as having closed on November 3rd and issued on 23rd December 1933. Had trouble reading the webpage on the screen of my mobile and just checked on my computer.
