Mandelson lords it up on first day of new job

PETER Mandelson took his seat in the House of Lords for the first time yesterday.
The new Business Secretary has taken the title Baron Mandelson of Foy and Hartlepool, the former being his favourite holiday spot in Hertfordshire and the latter his parliamentary constituency until he was dispatched to the European Commission in Brussels.
He wore the traditional ermine-lined scarlet robes as he swore allegiance to the Queen in a short ceremony, after being introduced by Baroness Jay of Paddington, the former Labour leader in the Lords, and Lord Falconer of Thoroton, the former Lord Chancellor. He took his seat in the Upper House to cheers.
Lord Mandelson's removal from his top post in Brussels will be sweetened by a "transitionary payment" of £78,000 a year for the next three years to ensure his income in his new job is the same as his £182,500 salary as the EU trade commissioner.
