Man who gave partner HIV is jailed

A MAN feared by police to have died in the Asian tsunami was jailed for 12 months yesterday for infecting his ex-girlfriend with the HIV virus.
James Cawley, 41, of Crewe, Cheshire, fled to Thailand for more than three years after being questioned by detectives over the offence.
An international appeal to trace him was launched and Cawley finally flew back to the UK in January 2007 and surrendered himself.
The haemophiliac was diagnosed with HIV at the age of 16 after he was given an infected blood transfusion, Preston Crown Court was told.
In 1993 he started a sexual relationship with his victim and they bought a house together in Accrington, Lancashire, but he did not tell her about his condition.
