Enjoy the flavour of a royal banquet – without the food

THE Queen is allowing the public to experience what it is like to be a guest at a glittering state banquet.
A new exhibition in the Buckingham Palace ballroom includes an enormous dining table laid out with hundreds of pieces of rare cutlery, glasses and table decorations.
Among the items are pieces from the Grand Service – a silver gilt dinner service made in 1811 for the Prince of Wales, later George IV, for £60,000 – set on a large horseshoe table. The table would normally be set for 170 guests, but this has been reduced to 89 for the exhibition, which was toured by the Queen yesterday.
The palace state rooms, including the state banquet display, are open to the public from next Tuesday until 29 September.
