CAROL Vorderman is stepping down from her role in the long-running Channel 4 gameshow Countdown, her manager said last night.
The 47-year-old presenter was the first woman to appear on Channel 4 and has been with the programme for 26 years, taking part in nearly 5,000 shows.
Her decision follows the announcement on Wednesday that Des O'Connor, 76, the host of Countdown, is also to quit the show when the current series ends in November.
Bookmakers taking bets on Vorderman's replacement say the prime contenders include Angela Rippon, Jo Brand, Sue Lawley and Jennie Bond.
John Miles, Vorderman's manager, said that her decision to quit had been a "difficult" one.
"Carol had considered quitting when Richard (Whiteley] died suddenly three years ago, but she eventually agreed to continue, turning down the offer to take over as host," he said.
"Countdown has been such a huge part of her life for so long."
