UEFA general secretary David Taylor has condemned the "disgraceful" scenes of violence which marred the Uefa Cup final in Manchester.
But Taylor has confirmed Rangers will face no sanctions from Europe's governing body.

Rangers fans fought with police in Manchester city centre after a big screen showing their team's 2-0 defeat against Zenit St Petersburg failed to work in a pack
ed Piccadilly Gardens.

Fifteen police officers were injured and a Zenit fan was stabbed, while 42 people were arrested during a night of trouble. Rangers have promised to take severe action against any fan who is found to have taken part in the violence. Taylor told BBC Radio 5 Live's Sportsweek programme: "It was really disgraceful and something on a scale we've not seen for some time. Whatever the issues around it, the giant screens not working or whatever, there are absolutely no excuses for the sort of disorder that occurred.

"Thankfully, it seems the authorities got on top of it pretty quickly and have expressed themselves satisfied that the vast majority of supporters were well behaved. But it was, of course, a very distasteful incident."

Taylor confirmed Rangers will not face disciplinary action from Uefa for the riots which occurred away from the City of Manchester Stadium. A Zenit fan was stabbed inside the stadium, but his injuries were not serious and five men arrested over the incident were released without charge.

Taylor said: "Our disciplinary rules relate to incidents in and around the stadium and Rangers, obviously, are giving their full co-operation to the authorities, banning any supporters found guilty of any incidents of disorder."

..so, in summary, if yir gonna riot, dae it ootside the stadium - and if yi really cannae wait till yir ootside before stabbing opposing fans, makes sure they dont actually die, then its "not serious". No, really.

Couldnae give a riotbatonoertheheid personally as to whether or no UEFA sanctions Rangers tbh - on the one hand, as many of their own fans would also admit, they definitely deserve it, on the other hand, it would inarguably harm Scotlands co-efficient. UEFA must also be big fans of UncleWalts free-firing football fantasticos, otherwise, there is really no explanation as to why they are not considering action. Lets face it, if you are not going to be questioned over that debacle, I really do not know what on earth UEFA do consider sanctionable behaviour now. Strange days, indeed.

From what I hear, the so-called stabbing was a pretty minor incident. Two fans had a scuffle and one fell over and got cut, by some broken glass lying on the ground according to some accounts.

As for violence away from the ground, much worse things have happened there in the past - the two Leeds fans who were stabbed to death in Turkey, for example. Should UEFA police everything fans do when near matches or on the way to matches?

No action to be taken, what a disgraceful decision.

What a disgraceful state of affairs.

Hordes of repulsive drunks trash manchester in the name of Rangers Football Club and all we hear are denials, deflections and excuses.

No wonder this appalling institution does nothing about the morons that support them.

Isnt this getting a bit overthe top. Rangers have shown throughout the tournament that they are concerned by the behaviour of a minority of alleged fans, who chose to carry out and engage in criminal behaviour (but wait dont certain posters on this site criticise them for that). Why dont we just change the law in an ad hoc basis whenrver it suits certain factions. Of course Rangers could not be held responsible for individuals who travelled to Manchester and entered fanzones, they had no say or control over the setting up or operation of them.

TAWTIE HOWKER,

Another non-story from the Scotsman.

Of course Rangers won't be banned or even warned.
Why?

Very simple. THEY DID NOTHING WRONG!!!!

They were given tickets by uEFA and they distributed them to Rangers fans.
None of those fans caused any trouble.

Those who did have no connection to Rangers Football Club.
So why would they be punished?

Just because you hate Rangers doesn't mean you can make it up as you go along.

Get a life and try and come to terms with things.

Rangers FC are the most successful football team in the world ,ever.
Bound to cause some jealousy and bitterness.....

Bleeding Heart...,

Oh well, that's the heat off then. There will be no ban, no threat to Rangers' potential financial gain from future participation in a European competition.

The Daily Poodle/Record can now be ordered to
scale-back its denial stories.

With the threat of sanctions apparently lifted, there presumably won't be the same urgency to "follow, follow" the dubious Rangers' line that the fans involved in the mayhem "don't normally attach themselves to our support".

The Daily Poodle/Record can now also quietly withdraw its laughable, unsubstantiated, claim that "none of the ringleaders wore colours or spoke with a Scottish accent"..?

Tawtie Howker,

"Those who did have no connection to Rangers Football Club."

Apart from being in Manchester, on the night of the UEFA Cup Final, wearing a Rangers top, or singing UVF, yeah, none at all. Your defence of the indefensible acts as a green light for this misbehaviour to continue.

The only hope is that the rest of Scotland is not tarnished by association with your hoolies.

I hate to say it, but "Scotland's Shame" has more than an element of truth to it.

Agree wholeheartedly. Scotland´s Shame. People trying to distance the riot from the club just as bad.

This despicable institution should be shut down for good. If one element of the club- its fans- sang "go back to Ethiopia, the famine´s over" I have no doubt it would be.

Scotlands Shame... Thats a good one. Talk about labelling every Rangers Fan or person associated with the Club as the same as some of the despicable Crimainal element who unfortunately asociate themselves with it.

Using the same definition does that mean that all Celtic Supporters and persons associated with that Club are all of thesame criminal element asthe perpetrators of the Celtic Boys Club scandal. But then again according to CFC, they werent anything to do with the club despite the fact tat they travelled to the USA every year under the auspices of the Club, were entertained there as ambasadors of the Club and the individuals concerned being supported by the club in terms of administrative support and playing and training equipment.

Whats good for one is obviously good for the other.
