EVERTON'S sorry start to the season continued as David Moyes' side crashed out of the Uefa Cup at the first hurdle against Standard Liege.
A far-post tap-in from Axel Witsel gave the Belgian side the lead, and although Phil Jagielka gave the Toffees hope, Milan Jovanovic grabbed the winner from the spot after being bundled over by Leighton Baines.
Everton came into the game requiring
a 1-0 victory to progress to the group stages, but they had not managed a clean sheet during a run of 13 games stretching back into last season.
The opening goal was sparked by a fierce 22-yard drive from captain Steven Defour that swerved through the air, forcing Howard into a fingertip save to his left.
The loose ball, though, was swiftly collected by Jovanovic who delivered a looping cross to the far post, which Witsel sidefooted home.
Jagielka did poke home his third career goal for Everton, but 12 minutes from time Baines bundled over Jovanovic inside the area, and Jovanovic beat Howard from 12 yards, compounding a miserable night for Everton.
Peter Crouch scored twice in extra-time to salvage a 2-2 draw at Guimaraes and take Portsmouth into the group stages, after they had trailed 2-0 at 90 minutes. Ragged Pompey surrendered a two-goal first-leg advantage inside 32 minutes as Guimaraes took advantage of sloppy defending to force extra-time.
Brazilian striker Douglas shot home in the 19th minute and goalkeeper David James was beaten again when rooted to his line, by a 35-yard shot from midfielder Joao Alves.
But Crouch made no mistake for his 100th goal in club football when nodding in at the far post from Glen Johnson's delivery in the 104th minute – and then added a second from Nadir Belhadj's pass.
Marlon Harewood struck his first goal of the season as Aston Villa booked their place in the group stages of the Uefa Cup despite being held to a 1-1 draw at home by Bulgaria's Litex Lovech. The former West Ham striker broke the deadlock after 27 minutes only for the visitors to level matters shortly after the break through a controversial penalty from Wilfred Niflore. But Villa ran out comfortable 4-2 aggregate winners.
Goals from Elano and Shaun Wright-Phillips steered Manchester City into the group stages of the Uefa Cup as a 2-1 win over Omonia Nicosia secured a 4-2 aggregate victory.
