THE sight of cows lazily grazing in a sunny field is for most of us an idyllic country scene which is quintessentially British. And we are rightfully proud of British dairy products, unquestioningly consuming milk, cheese and yoghurt as part of our daily diet. But behind the farm gate lurks a dark secret – the complex digestion system of cattle produces methane gas, which is a serious contributor to global warming.
Certain antibiotics can ease the problem but since the EU banned their use in healthy cattle in 2006 the race is on to find other ways of reducing the direct impact of cows' digestion on our planet.
