Published Date: 24 June 2008
RANGERS' television and sponsorship income from their run to the Uefa Cup final only just exceeded Celtic's earnings from reaching the last 16 of the Champions League.

Figures released by Uefa yesterday showed Celtic benefited from their second successive qualification for the knock-out phase to the tune of £10.3million.

Rangers earned £7.7m from their involvement in the Champions League group stages, tho
ugh they also brought in £4.1m from their run to the Uefa Cup final, taking their overall sum to £11.8m.

Gate receipts brought both clubs significant additional income, however the difference in earnings potential between the Uefa Cup and Champions League is shown clearly in the financial showings of the finalists in both competitions.

European champions Manchester United, unsurprisingly, were by far the biggest earners with £33.9m, while beaten finalists Chelsea were next with £28.7m, Liverpool took £21.1m and Arsenal £18.3m.

The difference compared to the sums earned from the Uefa Cup is stark. Apart from Rangers, Everton's income from the competition was £400,000, Tottenham and Bolton each earned £352,000 and Aberdeen received just £265,000 despite getting through the group stage.

With the four English clubs earning a total of £102m and Celtic and Rangers picking up a further £18m, 26 per cent of the £462m total Champions League television and sponsorship revenue ended up in British hands.

do these figures include gate receipts? celtic have 10000 more than the gers at every home game, thats alot of money.the only surprise here is that rangers didnt make more, they went all the way, just shows you the gulf between both cups.I'd still rather reach uefa cup final than last 16 every year, one year celtic will be lucky and get the luck of the draw, maybe give them a chance to go through.

In addition, I think Celtic picked up around £2m for winning the spl...but I suppose you have to take into account the free DVD Player that Rangers got for being given the CIS , and the widescreen HD Ready that came with the Scottish Cup.

But when you add on the higher attendances at CP, the fact that Celtic still profit in merchandising sales, the tiny debt that Celtic require to service , the ...I could go on : basically, overall, we made a shed load more than SS did....AND we have a reservation for CL 08/09.

Annnnnd....WE ARE THE CHAMPS!
18

chazbud,

vilnius 24/06/2008 01:06:45
you dont make more on merchandising, i think we have the monopoly on that, the extra revenue for the championship will be reveresed next year and your extra income from bigger stadium will be gone when Sir Minty Moonbeams builds us a better and bigger stadium! We will see if you "made shed loads more" when the financial figures for turnover come out, if you take away the extra gate receipts there is practically no difference! Were both as big and as ugly as each other.

PS the dvd and telly are crackers!

Revenue from Europe is great additional income, but we still win the SLP and go straight into the CL that's not bad for extra income, but RFC sold a very good asset for 9 mil, so with SDM spending 6 already there should be another 10 + to spend.

CFC should have 20 after that hugh winger we bought. Let's see what happens in the next 4 weeks.

As a football fan the financial success of my football club takes precedence over the results on the park. I was often heard shouting from the stands at Tynecastle last season as my team got papped "We may be getting beat but do you know that our drinks revenue was 125% more than you! So GIRUY!".
Seriously, you should be fighting over who is the best team if you're fitba fans. I know I would if Hearts were up at the top end of the league....but I can't....cos we're gash.

OF...As we dont really have the inside info on how this cash is redistributed within the clubs in question.i.e. does it go to service interest payments on debts?,cash for players?,Stadia improvements? or whatever fanciful idea comes up next' makes the arguement on who made more cash a moot point given the very different needs of each club and the small (in financial terms)difference in the sums quoted. If it makes your season seem that wee bit more successful in your eyes..Enjoy!

After the end of the group stages I remember raising the question about how many rounds of the UEFA Cup were needed to equal the income of one more game in the CL - somebody (can't remember who) - said semis or final. Well, it looks like you need to go all the way to the final to bring in the same cash.
Frankly I would rather we had gone out in the quarters or semis and won the League. We may have a little more cash, but we now have to deal with the lottery that is the qualification rounds for the CL.

The first band with two drummers was the David Bowie band Spiders, followed by the Glitter Band (remember them)

Cozy Powell then played in a two drummer band, but can't remember the name.

The best drummer has to be Keith Moon. They guy was a genius and numpty at the same time.

Best drummer ever saw was Simon Philips with Phil Manzanera's 801..(you might like them,107).Collins for all his MOR dreck is a FABULOUS drummer but seeing Neal Peart kicking it out at the Apollo with Rush is a real high!

Is it a book or a DVD.

I bought a DVD "The Moon Years" recently, and it was good value.

The guy was actually very smart, although he never gave that impression on stage.
