Victorious pair to run for Scotland

CROSS COUNTRY: Mhairi MacLennan (Charleston Academy), one of the top young athletes in the Inverness area, and Jake Wightman (Fettes College) claimed the senior titles at the Aviva Secondary School Cross Country Championships at Irvine.

The reward is selection to lead Scotland in the Home Countries Cross Country Championships at Rouken Glen Park in Glasgow this Sunday.

The other members of the girls’ team are Louisa Stewart (Mary Erskine’s School), Rachel Dunn (St George’s School) and Debbie Hannah (Lenzie Academy), while the rest of the boys’ line-up is Christopher Watson (Glasgow School of Sport), Chris Ponton (Wallace Hall Academy) and Greg Williams (Clydeview Academy), who has come as reserve for the unavailable Max Aitchison (Glasgow Academy).

At Irvine, Catriona Graves (Glasgow Academy), Kirsten Oakley (Prestwick Academy) and Laura Stark (St Columba’s School) won the younger girls’ titles and the boys’ trophies went to Gavin McArdle (Gelniffer High School), Alex Carcas (George Heriot’s School) and Anthony Addison (George Watson’s College).

As ever, the event attracted a huge number of athletes, with 129 taking part in the under-14 girls’ event. Over all the age-groups, the total was 617.
