IT'S good to touch the green, green grass of home. That Tom Jones classic may be whistled by Kenny Richey today as he returns to Scotland after more than 20 years on death row in the United States. Although this is the green issue of Recommends, we will certainly not take Mr Richey to task for taking a flight home to Scotland.
I should point out that the Best Green Song (featuring Sir Tom) is tongue in cheek and that Shakin Stevens' Green Door was not really written in homage to sustainable forests. You probably guessed that already.

Elsewhere in The Scotsman today, yo
u will have read about our green issue and why we joined forces with the Scottish Government to try to get more people to make small changes to their lives in an effort to make a difference globally. Think Global, Act Local as they say.

Hopefully, Recommends is useful today and will give you a few ideas about how to become a wee bit greener. For me, the kids are getting the message and that's the key. We now recycle loads of stuff at home, often prompted by young eco-offspring. It's the recycling bins that are overflowing and not the normal green wheelie bin (although it is pretty full after our Hogmanay party last week and the lack of a New Year collection, to be frank).

I hope you don't think we are preaching too much and that you enjoy this issue. Back to normal next week and then on 23 January, we will be doing a Burns special. We welcome your ideas (good and Bard) for the special – via the website, by e-mail or by post (see the panels at the bottom of each page). As ever, we can't be responsible for any disappointment from our recommendations.

I do all the usual recycling, take public transport whenever possible, use renewable light bulbs, etc. I have also joined a group dedicated to preserving Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park which is in danger of industrial development. Check out their website

Fact: By far the most substantial "green" contribution anyone can make is also the simplest. Simply do not have children. Any other contribution pales by comparison. Having one child creates a legacy of consumption that completely obliterates any and all "green" efforts that you could ever make in your own lifetime. This truth is self-evident and yet it appears to be too painful to say out loud. Instead we are left with the guilt-inducing nonsense that is printed day-after-day in this wretched publication.
