On the buses
1 LOTHIAN BUSES DAY TICKET, 0131-555 6363 www.lothianbuses.com

For £2.50 (£2 child), less than a third of the cost of an open-top bus tour, you can travel in and around Edinburgh on one
of the best and cheapest bus networks in Britain. There are frequent services on most routes, so you don’t need to bother about timetables. A route map is available from Lothian Buses Travelshops. Includes every part of the city, 14 miles of coast from Cramond to Seton Sands, and out to the edge of the Pentland Hills (similar, slightly dearer tickets, available for Dundee, Aberdeen, and Glasgow city services).

2 FIFE SUPER DAYRIDER, 01383 621249 www.stagecoachbus.com

Travel on Stagecoach services throughout Fife and on to Glasgow, Edinburgh and Dundee. It costs £10 (£5 child) or a group ticket for £20 can be used by two adults and two children or one adult and three children. Explore the picture-postcard East Neuk villages, St Andrews, the Fair City of Perth, and out to Pitlochry and St Fillans.

3 BLUEBIRD DAY EXPLORER, 01224 591381 www.stagecoachbus.com

It is valid on all Stagecoach buses from Brora south to Montrose and west to Braemar. The most comfortable bus travel in Scotland: modern coaches operate on many longer-distance routes. Great views from luxury double-deck coaches between Aberdeen and Peterhead. Fraserburgh to Banff via Gardenstown, a fine scenic route, operates on Saturdays only. A Family Explorer, for up to two adults and three children, is £16.

4 DUMFRIES AND GALLOWAY DAY DISCOVERER, 01387 260383 www.dgcommunity.net

Day Discoverer ticket includes most bus services in the area between Stranraer and Gretna, and it’s only £10 for up to two adults and three children (one adult is £5, a child £2). Visit the Artists’ Town, Scotland’s Book Town and the Food Town: respectively, Kirkcudbright, Wigtown and Castle Douglas. Also the Toffee Town (my own unofficial designation!) of Moffat.

5 STRATHCLYDE DAYTRIPPER, 0141-332 6811 www.spt.co.uk/tickets/daytripper.html

Covers most bus services, all train services, Glasgow Underground and the Gourock-Kilcreggan-Helensburgh ferry. From Ardlui in the north down the Clyde coast to Girvan and east to Biggar, and everywhere in between: lochs, Clydeside, seaside, Glasgow city, Burns’ country. It’s only £15 for two adults and up to four children, or £8.50 for one adult and two children.
