IN WHAT must seem confirmation that the Rail Maritime and Transport (RMT) Union lives in a parallel universe, two days of strikes on Scotland's rail services are to go ahead this week after a breakdown of talks. The dispute is over staff rosters. Even more bizarre is that, in a switch from normal union concerns about health and safety, Network Rail says the union's position puts safety at risk by demanding safety assessments be voluntary, not compulsory.
