Published Date: 01 December 2008
TODAY, in Poznan, 9,000 people representing governments, NGOs and environmental bodies in 190 countries will attend the start of the UN climate change conference. The task of the conference is to pave the way for a replacement of the Kyoto Treaty on cutting greenhouse gas emissions, to be finalised next year in Copenhagen. What makes the Poznan meeting doubly important is that it will signal whether or not the economic crisis has diverted political interest away from global warming towards the i
The recession is real and spreading to parts of the globe – such as China and the Gulf States – that only six months ago thought they were immune from the crisis. It is understandable, then, that faced with rising unemployment and spiralling public d...

Fortunately events have conspired to water down this tripe trip. The Scotsman is correct in that no sane government is going to go for negative growth during an economic downturn. Plus the EU will be presided over next year by a firm climate change skeptic as well as Germany having second thoughts on doing a suicide mission. The only one to watch is Obamy who might still commit the US to insanity to impress the eco-nutters.

Dear Editor

Why no criticism of the numbers of attendees? For goodness sake and meeting with 9000 attendees is an utter nonsense - any agreement will be impossible! Then there is the contribution to the alleged global warming/climate change associated with the travel (and associated emissions) of so many people.
Obama has claimed that the green revolution would result in jobs for 5 million Americans - will they all be chained to treadmills generating electricity?
Come on Scotsman - get real and start to report the real world - remember that the IPCC claims that it has the support of 2500 scientists (oft disputed by ever more of these scientists) BUT the Oregon group have (to date) some 32000 signatories of scientists who disagree that climate change is either man made or can be influenced by man's activities.

9000 people are needed to decide where the next taxpayer funded party should be held.

"Hands up who thinks it should be somewhere warmer again next time."

"OK. Thank you. Please resume eating your 7 course meal."

I believe in climate change. Can I get a ticket to the next junket please?
