Too many stars

In GIVING four stars to Sarah Connolly and John Horler's International Festival concert at The Hub last Friday, your reviewer Jan Fairley has been too kind to a classically-trained "Wannabe Jazz Singer", ignoring the complete lack of jazz phrasing, the inflections and nuances that most regular jazz followers take for granted when hearing singers from much less "exalted backgrounds".

When one takes into account the poor presentation, almost total absence of thanks for the applause, and adds in the dodgy diction (e.g. no "t" in "night" or "sight"), shaky top and bottom registers and unwillingness (surely not inability!) to hold a note more than two or three beats, this was in fact a truly underwhelming experience. I had gone along principally to hear the wonderful accompanist John Horler, who coped magnificently with the severely restricted material, and would merely end by recommending both the singer and your reviewer to check out proper jazz singers such as Tina May, the Claires Martin and Teale, and of course Scotland's own Carol Kidd, if they want to hear how it should be done.
