Motherwell 1 Hibernian 4: Hibs fans told to enjoy Fletcher while they can

Published Date: 24 November 2008
IT is a scenario which has become all too familiar to Hibernian supporters in recent years. An up-and-coming talent emerges from their youth-ranks, comes to prominence in their first team and then rivals step forward desperate to whisk him off to pastures new.
Kenny Miller, Scott Brown, Kevin Thomson, Ian Murray and Derek Riordan all progressed through the ranks at Easter Road before the Old Firm came calling to take them along the M8. Could Steven Fletcher be the next to follow this well worn path?

Hibernian fear they will not be able to hold on to Fletcher when the transfer window opens on 1 January and the rising Scotland star has been touted for a move to Celtic Park.

Wherever he ends up it seems highly unlikely Fletcher will be in the capital for the foreseeable future and Hibernian have already started preparing for his departure with the signing of former Rangers striker Jonatan Johansson. If Hibernian's negotiations over Brown and Thomson's transfers to Celtic and Rangers are anything to go by then they have proved they will be no pushover in terms of the fee.

Fletcher showed at Fir Park just why there will be such a clamour for his signature once the transfer window opens and if he continues to play in the manner in which he destroyed Motherwell then he will surely be at the forefront of George Burley's thoughts for the crucial World Cup qualifier against Holland next March.

Fletcher produced a masterclass as he tormented Motherwell with his movement and range of passing and rounded off a wonderful performance with a stunning 30-yard strike as Hibernian claimed their first win in seven outings.

Riordan has not just seen this movie before, he has starred in it when he completed a transfer to Celtic in June 2006 for £170,000. Riordan is well aware that these sort of moves can quickly turn sour and unable to make the breakthrough at the SPL champions he rejoined Hibs earlier this year. However, he has not offered Fletcher advice on what his next move should be.

Riordan said: "We want Fletch to stay – he's a good player and a great asset to the team. He's obviously going to move on at one point in his career – if he wants to move on it's up to him, it's his choice.

"I've not spoken to him about it, it's his life and you make your own choices. Obviously it didn't go well for me when I moved but I can't do anything about that. You makes choices in life and if it works, it works.

"Our fans should enjoy seeing him while he's here. I'm a Hibs supporter myself, though, and I remember being raging when our best players left. That's just part and parcel of football and you need to get on with it.

"But when I was younger I loved Tony Rougier for some reason and he left. Fans get frustrated – I remember I felt like that. You can't blame them, that's what happens."

Hibernian took just five minutes to break down Motherwell's resistance as John Rankin drilled in a low shot from 18 yards which went in off the base of Graeme Smith's right-hand post. In truth their opener should have arrived even sooner as Riordan was sent clean through by Fletcher inside the first minute but was unable to get the better of Smith.

Motherwell had barely troubled Hibernian's defence but four minutes prior to the interval they drew level as Bob Malcolm curled a free kick into the top corner.

However, Hibs reasserted their authority four minutes after the break when Riordan and Fletcher combined to set up Dean Shiels who squeezed a shot home. Then, on 61 minutes,

Fletcher got the goal his all-round performance deserved. As Murray's run along the penalty area was halted the ball broke to Fletcher, lurking 30 yards from the goal, and he unleashed an unstoppable first-time left-foot shot.

In injury-time Riordan finally got his goal as he finished off a swift Hibernian counter-attack.

Mark McGhee used his programme notes to offer Motherwell supporters the opportunity to meet him any time to discuss his side, after being annoyed at their criticism of one of his substitutions the previous weekend.

Some may well take him up on his offer after this lacklustre display which was far removed from the energetic ones which enabled them to clinch third spot last term. McGhee said: "That's as bad as it's been since I came here. We played like 11 individuals."

MAN OF THE MATCH: Stven Fletcher (Hibs)

The rising Scotland star was sensational from the first minute, when he sent Derek Riordan clean through, to when he was replaced after 79 minutes after topping off his display with a stunning 30-yard strike.

8 Brendan the Scozzie, It's quite possible that an EPL club has enquired about him, we have no way of knowing. The Scotsman are driven to naming Celtic because we all know that Rangers can't afford him. If he does leave in January I wish him well but sincerely hope that he stays well clear of the manky mobs fae Glesga......

FLETCHER should be 1st choice now.....why do we always have to wait until a player joins Celtic /Rangers before they are deemed good enough for Scotland(or in this case hopefully an EPL team)

Hearts & Hibs delivered 4 or 5 cracking goals between them at the weekend with Drivers the best of the lot.

Jan 3rd could be another classic Derby with Edin once again showing Glasgow that the Edin Derby will always produce a better game of football.

GRAEME SMITH insisted today that he and his team-mates will be so focused on their own game this weekend that they won't have time to worry about how many strikers Hibs name in their line-up.

Didn't have time 'cause he spent half the game picking the ball out of his net

22 Your selective memory seems to have oblterated your goalkeepers kung fu attack last season where he was not sent off for assault.

Boruc's tackle was poor but not any way near as bad. When Terry Butcher actually states that the ref got it right maybe you should take of the blinkers. When you see the replay Boruc realises that he is not going to get the ball and actually pulls his foot away. I am not excusing him, it was a bad tackle but it was only a yellow card.

Keep digging up the excuses and get them in early. Just like last season Rangers wont lose the league because of their lack of ability, it will be the refs, the sfa and the spl all conspiring against them.

Ah well next up some European football, hope the telly is good on tuesday night or will you be watching us in the CL??

I think we should keep Fletch at least until the end of the season, unless a dream, once in a lifetime move to Europe or the EPL is on the cards, that would be best for Fletch and best for Hibs. I would like to think on this occasion the board, Mixu and Fletch himself will stand up to the manky ones and give them the bird, he is better than that and can become a legend for Scotland but he needs a bigger platform to perform on than the SPL.

32 Do you actually understand finances. Have you seen Celtics financial results over the last 3 years. Our debt is neglibible, our operating costs are probably second to none in terms of outgoins against income. Celtic are living within their means, not spending money they don't have and have reduced their debt levels to probably the lowest of all clubs operating at Champions League level.

In these economic times it makes sense, obviously it touched a nerve with Minty last week with his once again ill thought out comments on Celtic.

We have enough quality in our side to win the SPL, we are not out of Europe(yet). Tough couple of weeks coming in that direcetion. I for one am looking forward to the rest of the season, and am actually hoping you lot will keep us under pressure as it is more enjoyable to win a tight race than to have it all done by end of January.

40 Still clinging on to the "European Cup" stat that somebody published last year.

Let me point out for all of the hard of understanding. Rangers have NEVER won the European Cup.

You won a European competition but not THE EUROPEAN CUP.

There is a massive difference in the two. Any European trophy on your CV is very nice to have, however the difference between winning the Cup Winners Cup and the European Cup is like getting a diploma from a college and a First in a Degree from a major University.

Any way what is more important is now not semantics over stats. I am hoping for a decent result in Europe tomorrow for my team and with a bit of luck this will lead to a fantastic prospect with us playing Villa Real at home in a game that will decide who goes through. Exciting stuff to come.

Enjoy Survivors on Tuesday

I posted on Friday that Mr Collum had a tough afternoon ahead of him. His dichotomy was thus: Appease his flock and peers at Cardinal Newman High, or help to repair the damaged integrity of Scottish referees. This follows months of nprecedented "errors" that predominantly favoured one side.

Sadly he buckled, bottled it, chose whichever phrase you wish, but integrity flew out the window as he took the plaudits and back slaps in the staff room this morning.

I defy any reasonable minded Celtic fan to deny that week after week, the outrageous fortune they have enjoyed, is now an embarassement to them.

Sterling performance by Rangers on Saturday. Despite desperate attempts including a blatant forearm smash by serial no hoper and sheepie/hoopy clappy Diamond, Oberdoom had another miserable trip to Glasgow.

ALthough missing 4 first starts, Rangers, with Mendes instrumental simmply cut through the sheep like a carving knife through roast lamb.

My eyes must have decieved when I saw Boyd score the second. He doesn't score against top 6 sides apparently!

48 I will agree with you that Celtic have had the rub in terms of getting a few decisions in the last couple of weeks, however I will happily say that I am not embarassed by any of them as I believe they were given in good faith and called as the ref seen it. Same as the decisions that you have had over the years. I have yet to see any Rangers apologist for Mike Mc Curry and his cronies over the years. We will no doubt suffer from the dubious decisons over ther coming months.

As I said in my Earlier post the ref on Saturday has nothing to feel embarassed about, it was the correct decision. Your references to the fact that the ref teaches at a Catholic school does you no favours.

50 Maggie You produced a long list of stat highlighting trophies won. Yet when it came to European trophies you "lump" them together. Typically convenient, similarly your comparison with Bayern Munich as "arguably" the greatest win by a scottish team. Not a chance it is not even a subject for debate. A fine win it was, however Bayern were not even champions of Germany. It is a worldwide accepted fact that the greatest result ever achieved by a scottish club came in in the European Champions Cup, in Lisbon on the 25th May 1963, where a Celtic side defeated Inter Milan by 2 goals to 1 and became the first British and Northern European side to win the biggest prize in club football. Now please do not try to compare any of your clubs achievments to this as it makes you look churlish.

You can manipulate the statistics all you like but they still dont make the competitions level. When you played Bayern they were not Champions of Germany (fact ) they may have become champions that season but they were not reigning champions of their country. Last season 8 Rangers players, McGregor, Hutton, Weir, Whittaker, McCulloch, Novo, Darchville and Cousin were dismissed for violent conduct. Also, Ferguson and Thomson suffered European bans for multiple bookings. In addirion to that we had the extraordinary incident at Ibrox towards the end of the season when Cousin's blatant head butt on Dundee Utd's skipper, Lee Wilkie was treated with impunity by referee Mike McCurry. It's ironic therefore that you should highlight a singular foul by Celtic's goalkeeper to vent your fury over violence on the football field.

Magnum. I'm not debating the logic or otherwise of schooling. That's for a different forum.

My point is simple. Collum called it hugely wrong. I predicted on Friday afternoon he would have a tough call at some stage during the game. He could do the right thing, or bow to the pressure to appease his work colleagues and flock, the majority of whom are likely to be Celtic Fans. He chose the latter.

Dr Conroy and Eddie Smith are Celtic men. Maybe Mr Collum is too.

I would argue none of the above can objectively referee Celtic matches. The evidence in terms of "errors" is quite simply overwhelming.

Rangers didn't lose the SPL to a better team last season. No, they lost it because they were too tired as a result of an SFA / SPL conspiracy. Rangers weren't eliminated from Europe this season by a better team. No, they lost because the matches were played too early in the season. Rangers are not trailing behind Celtic in the SPL this season because Celtic are the better side. No. it's entirely due to cheating referees.

You heard it here first folks!

Very fair point. Fans really can't be ref's. If they are then they need to be seen to be strong, resolute and above all balanced. Soemthing the three amigo's above have failed to display.

If I am completely wrong, and it has happened once before (pre internet days I grant you), then the swings and roundabout theorists will get a full apology. Mind you, only after Rangers, Hearts, Hibs, Motherwell etc get a solid run of decisions against Celtic.

Titles are decided over 38 matches, not a single head to head as Celtic have clearly demonstrated over the past 3 years and 6 out of the last 8. However, if you wish to hang on to that singular victory as the title decider then so be it. Celtic simply put that reverse behind them and are forging ahead to another title after 11 consecutive victories.

Only an idiot would argue otherwise!

Magnum...thought i would pop back on to see how you are getting on.....not very well it would seem....your most recent attempt(post 84)lowers your standard even further.....only an idiot would argue that a single game dictates the standard of a side.....or are Kanuas a better team than Rangers?

So you are suggesting that Real Madrid's, Manchester Utd's Ajax and Liverpool's European Cup wins should be downgraded because, after all, they occurred in the same era as Celtic's win?

The fact that Celtic were once Champions Of Europe really sticks in your craw and it's been sticking there for over 40 years. How uncomfortable!

Magnum.... sorry you have lowered the standard even further...post#87...it was harder to win the FA CUP.....corelate that statement with the fact that at that time no ENGLISH club had won the European cup!!!

FFS and you accused me of being stupid.

80 It is all very well to come onto these posts and "infer" due to where he teaches and the subject that he teaches, any decision made by Mr Collum, in favour of Celtic is suspect. I could accept that from you had you spent the last few years arguing the same over guys the Mike Mc Curry and Hugh Dallas et al. Never once have you posted on here decrying the decisions given to Rangers by the said gentleman. It was always argued that "he gave what he saw" Mr mc Curry is a lifelong Rangers fan yet you never saw fit to ask why he was given so many Rangers games to officiate. If you lose the championship this year it will be because of football reasons the same as last year. You were NOT cheated last year you lost due to your inability to win away from home.

Magnum, you are embarassing yourself. Celtic have won the premier club competion, rangers havent. Get over it.

I reckon Strachan has a had a bellyfull (no pun intended) Zaluskas looks a better prospect for club and country. If he gets the guarantee of first team football (and why wouldn't he ?) the the rumoured sale of Broon4.5 to THFC will make it a cash offer to Utd and a done deal.

Ole Arty can practice his martial, or should that be marital arts from the sidelines...in between sips.

After 15 SPL matches Celtic are 4 points ahead of Rangers after both playing against the same 'diddy teams' How does this help your argument?

And yes, Celtic fell short against Man Utd, the current European champions although they managed a draw at Celtic Park. How does this compare with Rangers' European results this season and how would you classify Kaunas in your definition of 'diddy teams'?

I thought Rangers would really miss Davis on Saturday. he has been a most dynamic performer this season. In reality it just allowed Mendes and Ferguson (still not match sharp yet) to shine. Mendes use of the ball was a lesson for any would be player...Hartley, Broon and co take note.

How fortunate Walter is to have a midfield trio of such quality. KT's injury was a big loss but it seems Rangers have strength in depth, illustrated by the sterling performances from Whittaker and Darcheville.

Not convinced by McCulloch at CB though....

At least Celtic are on the list of European Champions. One notable absentee from that list is Rangers. However, Rangers did once reach the semi-final which, according to Magnum Oplus, is a far greater achievement than actually winning the competition.

You heard it here first folks!

Weegies, and plastic weegies, P*** off. This is a Hibs thread and, a few jumbos eating humble pie aside, should be for Hibs, or Motherwell, fans. None of us want to trawl through your useless drivelling guff about what you did or didn't win 30/40yrs ago. Get over yourselves, nobody actually cares.

109 I believe the actual trophy won by Celtic is currently with the mighty real madrid as they got to keep that trophy. However if you really want to see what it looks like just pop along to Celtic park and book a tour. There is a full size replica in our trophy cabinet
