Tournament 'could decide British football team'

A TOURNAMENT between the home nations could produce a British football team for the Olympics, Conservative leader David Cameron said yesterday.
Gordon Brown, the Prime Minister, has already called for a British football team for the Games in London in 2012.
Mr Cameron said yesterday: "I think, for the Olympics, there's merit in the idea. There is this need to have the one national team.
"Maybe the answer is to have a home (nations] tournament, see who wins, and that team goes forward.
"But for the Olympics, we have got to settle this so there is a representative team."
But Alex Salmond, the First Minister, dismissed the idea.
He said: "We should listen to what the Scottish Football Association says, and what the Tartan Army says, and under no circumstances put at risk the future of Scotland as an independent international football side for the sake of participation in any tournament at the Olympics."
