Published Date: 13 November 2008
A GROUP of Scotland-linked MPs have lent their backing to a United Kingdom football team competing at the London Olympics in 2012.
A total of 18 MPs who are either Scottish or represent Scottish constituencies, signed a Commons motion saying football "should not be any different from other competing sports and our young talent should be allowed to show their skills on the world
stage".

The football governing bodies of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are all opposed to a Great Britain team, fearing it would stop them competing as individual nations in future tournaments.

But the motion comes after assurances from world governing body Fifa that Team GB would not jeopardise the status of any of the home nations.
Scottish Secretary Jim Murphy said recently that he had spoken to Fifa's general secretary who told him the body was likely to view the Olympic competition as a "one-off under-23 tournament".

The 18 Scotland-linked MPs were among 21 to sign an Early Day Motion put down by Labour's Jim Sheridan (Paisley and Renfrewshire North).

It reads "This House welcomes the assurances given by FIFA that a 2012 Olympics UK football team would not undermine any of the home countries' ability to compete in their own right in future events; and further notes that football should not be any different from other competing sports and our young talent should be allowed to show their skills on the world stage."

It was signed by 11 Labour colleagues with seats north of the border, as well as shadow Scotland secretary David Mundell (Dumfriesshire, Clydesdale and Tweeddale).

The MPs are: John Robertson (Glasgow North West), Jim Devine (Livingston), Jim Hood (Lanark and Hamilton East), Brian Donohoe (Ayrshire Central), Anne Moffat (East Lothian), Mohammad Sarwar (Glasgow Central), Anne McGuire (Stirling), Russell Brown (Dumfries and Galloway), Michael Connarty (Linlithgow and Falkirk East), Anne Begg (Aberdeen South) and Jim McGovern (Dundee West).

Other Labour MPs putting their names to the motion were Edinburgh-born Doug Henderson (Newcastle Upon Tyne N), Greenock-born Andy Love (Edmonton), Coatbridge-born Jim Cunningham (Coventry South) and Dumfries-born Ian Gibson (Norwich North).

Labour colleagues David Anderson (Blaydon), Alan Keen (Feltham and Heston) and Andrew Miller (Ellesmere Port and Neston) also signed it.

Scotland have 59 mps.

So if 18 mps put their name to this and only some of them were from scottish constituencies that is a minority of scottish mps.

Hopefully Scotland supporters will take note of the 18 names, just in case one of them is the MP they might have voted for at the next election.

Have just heard that if we had know about this recession we would not have bid for the Olympics says Tessa Jowell saw her on BBC of course she tried to put a spin on it and she is the one telling the SNP they should be doing more.

How predictable that the usual suspects and nodding dogs would follow in their master's footsteps.

Just enter an England team and call it team UK. Should do the trick because we don't want the host country unrepresented at football. In any case, an absence of a UK team would only highlight the anomaly of several national teams usually representing the UK and maybe stir action to reduce them.

Couldn't care less about football myself but I note the motion has not been signed by Tom Harris MP whose constituency includes Hampden.

If he signs it I will believe Labour are serious about this. Until then I just think it's being done to pick a fight with the SNP.

One of the signatories to this motion appears to be a previously unheard of MP, one Anne McGuire (Stirling).

Curiously, she is actually the wife of Len McGuire, Chairman of Clyde FC, members of the SFA who are stridently opposed to this concept.

Is this another example of the regretfully high number of dysfunctional families emanating from the Stirling area?

Incidentally, have a google at the individual who is offering the reassurance that Scotland’s international position would not be affected by this issue.

“Commercial lie” is the phrase to concentrate upon.

UEFA general sec David Taylor warned the SFA over Fifa's claims. He knows.

Look at this traitorous lot. Brown's henchmen. He will use this to form a permanent British football team.

JayDeeTee,

#14. Probably not. The Unionists are hell bent on letting England run our affairs anyway so all they will do is accept this meekly and wave their wee Union Jack flags, happy that the "national" side consist of 11 Englishmen and play at Wembley.

Lord (Seb) Coe, said on BBC today, that 75p in every pound was being spent on renewing and re-building the east end of London in preparation for the olympics. Scottish tax payers money well spent. Not.

Scotland football fans should make a mental note to vote for any candidate but these low -lifes. This is NOTHING to do with the olympics, and EVERYTHING to do with Labour obsession with bashing Scotland, in the mistaken assumption it will harm the SNP.

Well I sincerly hope that it will lead to a permanent British soccer team there is an odd scotsman and 3,or4 in wales who could strengthen the current England team.

Its high time Scotland pulled its weight in bringing home the finance to keep this country going.

The English have proved they can feed us all, but there should be no harm in the whole nation pulling together.
