Tuning out from English
Published Date:

So, according to Andrew Lanigan (sports letters, 24 November), Scotland is not a serious country in light of the sporting sympathy we have for Argentina and other nations playing England.
Unfortunately he misses the point.
Rather, Scotland is not a serious country because it allows its television coverage of World Cups where England is involved but Scotland not to be viewed from the English rather than the Scottish perspective. No other football nation would tolerate taking the coverage of one of their sporting rivals and nor would the English if Scotland were to qualify for a finals and England didn't.
It is this media imbalance that undeniably causes most of the support for England's opponents. Scots fans are simply seeking to replace the misery of coping with a British media that promotes the English perspective to the exclusion of their own by revelling in the misery of their near neighbours.
It may not be an ideal state of affairs for Scots fans to act in this way but given the circumstances it is entirely understandable.
