I am surprised that you find it "unclear" why the Westminster government is so determined to see HBOS taken over by Lloyds TSB (your report, 29 November), for many of your readers, as your letters page has repeatedly shown, find it as clear as daylight.
Scotland's banks have been one of the mainstays of the nation's economy; their destruction as independent institutions will seriously damage Scotland's financial capability; and this – the government hopes – will weaken the case and the desire for Scottish independence. It is as simple, as blatant, and as shameless, as that. Are we going to let them off with it?

So preventing HBOS from going the tubes by supporting the merger was an act designed by the UK gov to upset the economic case for independence?
Paranoid delusion!
I suppose letting HBOS disappear as a "Scottish" bank would be preferable to seeing it be merged???
What utter transparent rot....
The SNPites did nothing, had no ideas and are now casting around for a way to spin their way out of this hole.....
