Further to David Black's commentary (Debate & Opinion, 19 July), people the world over long to visit and see this beautiful historic city of ours – a city of romance and beauty, of hills, parks and trees and glimpses of shining blue water. And in the centre, on a high rock, stands an ancient castle and all around are gardens, and here people walk to work, not grimly but with the unconscious pleasure of people in their surroundings, to whom it has always been there. It is yours.
Guard it, protect it from those who would destroy. We have in this ancient city a gem without price.

M MURRAY
Queensferry Road
Edinburgh

I have lived in Edinburgh for 81 years and although it is smaller than Glasgow, it is our capital and I love it.

I hate, but willingly accept, all the tram work inconveniences because I loved the trams. If one could run fast enough one could jump on a tram anywhere.

I doubt if this will apply when our new trams appear.

It is truly the most beautiful city I have ever been to. It shines above them all!

And it is now the biggest transportation shambles of any tourist city in Western Europe - roadworks with no activity, traffic management that is designed to congest, unco-ordinated schemes (you can hardly drive through Edinburgh and you can hardly drive round it) poorly managed priorities by Government and local Government. And it's all going to get worse.

Still, as long as our national politicians can get a ticket for the first ride on the £1/2 billion tram whilst at the same time tourists and locals continue to die on the inadequate A9 for the want of investment that'll be alright.
