Obama sitting pretty as poll share breaks the 50% barrier

Published Date: 14 October 2008
THREE national polls have put Barack Obama's share of the vote past the 50 per cent mark for the first time in the presidential election, piling pressure on the Republicans to find a game-changing strategy.
A couple of minor, isolated polls in the past ten days have hinted that Mr Obama would top 50 but yesterday, with three weeks until the election, an ABC News/Washington Post poll gave the Democrat a ten-point lead of 53 points to John McCain's 43. Gallup gave him a more modest 52 to 43 lead and a Rasmussen poll put Mr Obama's lead at 50 to 45.

Mr Obama yesterday sought to consolidate his lead by unveiling a rescue plan to tackle the economic crisis. At a rally in Toledo, Ohio, he said: "This crisis has taught us that we can't have a strong economy with a dysfunctional financial system.

"If we are honest with ourselves, everyone was living beyond their means."

The plan includes a three-month moratorium on mortgage foreclosures, a major worry for millions of homeowners, together with previously outlined plans for protectionist tax breaks to stop the export of jobs.

Mr McCain promised his own set of new economic initiatives in a relaunched campaign, promising a plan to use government cash to bail-out failing mortgages.

He told supporters at Virginia Beach, Virginia: "Let me give you the state of the race today. We have 22 days to go.

"We're six points down. The national media has written us off."

Details of Mr McCain's plan are expected later this week, but one confidant, Senator Lindsey Graham, promised a big hit: "It will be a very comprehensive approach to jump-start the economy."

Mr McCain yesterday sought to turn his opponent's advantage against him, portraying Mr Obama as complacent.

He said: "Mr Obama is already measuring the drapes for the White House. My friends, we've got them just where we want them."

Not all Republicans would necessarily agree; Mr McCain is losing ground not just nationally but in the swing states where the election is likely to be decided.

Electoral mathematics means Mr Obama needs to win just one of the five biggest swing states to get to the White House.

Currently, he has steady leads in three of them: Florida, Missouri and Virginia, and is neck-and-neck with Mr McCain in Ohio and North Carolina.

Even if Mr McCain can hold all five, Mr Obama still wins if he can hold the 5-11 point leads he now enjoys in the western states of Colorado and Nevada.

To win back lost ground, Mr McCain must correct a growing perception that he blows with the wind. When the financial crisis first broke last month, the Republican cancelled his appearance at the first presidential debate and flew to Washington to try to broker the first version of the Wall Street bail-out plan.

He was forced into an awkward reverse and attended the debate after all.

Next, he tried to divert voter attention from a meltdown blamed on Republicans by turning his fire on Mr Obama's character. But the contention by his running mate, Sarah Palin that Mr Obama consorts with terrorists backfired last week when racist and xenophobic chants broke out at Republican rallies.

So once again, Mr McCain has veered back to the economy.

Philip Klein, a columnist on the American Spectator, said: "He's been all over the place in the past few weeks. He needs to re-establish himself as a mature, steady hand."

Of the two campaigns, Mr Obama's is the most energetic: returns show that in the past five weeks, Mr Obama, his wife Michelle and running mate Joe Biden have made 95 appearances, nearly double the 55 clocked up by Mr McCain, his wife Cindy and Mrs Palin.

Experts wonder how Bradley Effect will affect vote

IN AMERICA, they call it the Bradley Effect: the name given to a voter quirk that right now is the biggest single uncertainty in the presidential race.

Tom Bradley was a popular black Democratic mayor of Los Angeles who ran for California governor in 1982. Throughout the campaign, Mr Bradley held a comfortable poll lead over his white rival, but ended up losing the election.

Exit polls later showed that white voters had shied away from Mr Bradley by six points: apparently, they had told pollsters they liked him, but inside the voting booth chose not to support a black man.

Now pollsters are wondering if history could be repeating itself. Washington University researchers say that, based on analysis of polling and voting in the primary elections, the Bradley Effect could shave three or four points off Mr Obama's lead. But the Bradley Effect can cut both ways: in 12 out of the 32 primaries surveyed, Mr Obama actually out-performed his polled predictions, leading to speculation that whites who had been prejudiced may have left discrimination at the polling station door.

Nobody knows how widespread racist sentiment in America is, because few polls ask the question. How can they expect a straight answer in a country where stating a racial prejudice can be a crime?

It's really hard for me to wrap my head around the "Bradley effect". I've always followed those whom I believed to have the right answers, and who could convince me that they knew what they were doing.I never cared if they were orange, and had earrings in there toes, convince me that you're right, and I'll follow you to the gates of Hell. (Go past those gates, and you may just go alone; ).

So please tell me double dog, how exactly does one wrap his/her head around something? Just curious.

As far as the article goes, Obama more than likely will win but I can see someone picking him off not too far into his term. There are far too many hostilities shown towards him because of him being black and because of a Muslim background, either way he loses.
On the bright side, you're better off with Biden than Palin, if McCain were to kick the bucket Palin would bury you all in a very short time. Or burn you at the stake.

Answer:

Chris you neglected to finish off McCain's punch line.

McCain actually said, "The national media has written us off. BUT THEY FORGOT TO LET YOU [the voters] DECIDE."(emphasis mine)

McCain is correct that the news media, especially biased reporters such as you, have the arrogance to write the headlines of Obama winning before we even have the opportunity to vote.

It is interesting that "The Scotsman" would publish such slanted and unfactual information that belongs on an editorialor blog page.

As far as the polls are concerned, no one has ever asked my opinion nor that of anyone I know. If they did they would be told it was none of their business.

McCain should forget his presidential aspirations before any more money is wasted and retire to tend his window boxes.

The Palin woman should follow his example and flaunt her blubber around the outback bars of Alaska.

These two individuals are an embarrassment.

Barack Obama 'THE MAN' continues to pick up the pace heading towards the finish line. He's on the home run as Geriatric McCain with his 'bimbonic' sidekick Palin stumble along with her cloddish gaffes.

Joe Biden, the happy warrior, woos places that Barack Obama cannot reach
"But Mr Biden is far from a traditional attack dog. Nicknamed "Joe Blow", he is more of a one-man Blarney machine, generating a blizzard of words, some cruel but many tinged with kindness, aimed at his opponent and long-time Senate friend John McCain"

What's really amusing, is the fact that all the Palin bimbo supporters here at the 'Scotsman' are getting their butts kicked big-time.......... LOL

Yep, the republican losers are heading for the hills with their tails tucked firmly between their legs.

How good is that?

Yee Ha.........

"If we are honest with ourselves, everyone was living beyond their means." --Obama

Answer:

Obama can speak for himself. There were many of us
who were not living beyond our means but were, in fact, living BELOW our means.

This global economic crisis would never have started if it had not been for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac giving low-income people mortgages that they did not qualify for and could never hope to pay off.

When these two institutions were called to task by regulators and by McCain in 2004, it was the Democrat Barney Frank who berated the regulators and defended the culprits running Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

To make matters worse, these subprime loans were bundled up and sold off as securities around the world.

Now Wall Street is blamed entirely when it all started with the lunatic Affirmative Action policies where minorities were entitled to a mortgage on a house whether they could afford it or not.

The Democrats are responsible for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. How does Obama think that he is going to turn the economy around when he and his party are the cause of the problem?

Yes, financially responsible Americans are angry about the economy and know that Obama as President would perpetuate the further ruin of the US economy.

Everyone rages about Palin with her finger on the button etc!If it was a straight choice between her and Obama, who is the more trustworthy and qualified for the job?
When it comes to background, Palin has not consorted with the undesireables that Obama has. Jeremiah White's church Vision statement based on the words of Dr James Cone states "Christianity and Whiteness are opposites".He was all in favour of a flat rate funding for Presidential nominees. (Which McCain supported also). Then, "all change" when he was made aware he could 'buy' the Presidency by raking in possibly US$500,000,000 dollars in "Donations"!
The Ayers connection will come to fruition once he is elected President.
Strange, that immediately he was elected a Senator, the University of Chicago's Medical Centre was 'earmarked' US$1Million dollars and the President of the Med Centre received a pay rise of US$200,000dollars,and that was Michelle Obama!
Far from being the "Messiah" many want him to be,he is a sleaze merchant who will make Teflon Tony Blair look like Barbie's Ken by comparison. To all those who vote for him, look forward to your comments once the honeymoon is over.
Oh!and he is not an African American Black either (don't mention the Birth Certificate fraud either)He is 50% White,43.75%Arab, and 6.25%Black.(in law he must be 12.5% Black to be considered one)That being said shouldn't the very Blacks he is wooing perhaps reflect on the fact that it was in the main the very same Arabs who stocked the slave ships heading for the good ole USA?

It is extremely difficult for anyone not intimately familiar with the American culture to understand the psychological depth of race issues in America. In fact, the word "race" is currently used as a euphemism for "racism", the proper word that conveys the intended meaning.

I recommend that people watch the movie "In the heat of the night" - not only is this a very good film in its own right, it also gives a portrayal of racism in the American south to which most middle-aged whites were exposed in their youth. Such are precisely the voters who would rather sink than accept a black man in the White House.

When McCain referred to Obama using the expression "that one", he was not simply disrespecting a fellow citizen whose achievements McCain can never hope to match (Obama got admitted to Harvard based on this own merits and graduated first in his class, McCain got into the Naval Academy because his father and graduated at the bottom of his class, etc). In using that phrase, McCain was uttering a racist slur disguised as a Freudian slip. The American Press, not unexpectedly, ignored the incident. Why? Perhaps because it is embarrassing that a national hero (McCain is viewed as a hero by many) allows himself to express feelings considered taboo.

If Obama defeats McCain it will reflect an act of extreme desperation by a terrified population with nowhere else to go. Changes in Obama's numbers are almost entire explained by the stock market. If the stock market recovers sufficiently in the next three weeks, it would make sense to assume white voters will return to McCain as the economic panic eases.

Answer:

This is Obama's sop to the unions that were the cause of all those American jobs being exported in the first place.

When protectionist measures were put in place during the Great Depression it made everything worse rather than better.

Everyone agrees that we need our industry and jobs back on American soil to build up our economy, but if the unions continue to demand exhorbitant wages and benefits, employers cannot possibly make a business profitable.

If a business is not profitable why would a businessman bother having a business...a fine point that escapes the unions.

I watched Obama being asked a question at one of his rallies by a plumber. The plumber asked if his taxes were going to be raised.
Obama did not deny that his taxes were going to be raised, he said, "It is not that I want to to protect just you, but all the others who are behind you" by redistributing the wealth.

He confirmed that the plumber's taxes would be raised so that the lower middles cless and poor can have the money the he has earned could be distributed to the poor.

The plumber didn't look to happy about this. THIS IS SOCIALISM and most people don't want to support others who did not work, or are always looking for handouts, especially from the gov't.

When McCain said "that one" he was referring to the word "democrat".
I didn't see Obama going to fight for his country, I didn't see Obama sitting in the Hanoi Hilton for 5 1/2 years being tortured.
What I do see is Obama, a man who went from one job to another, with questionable people helping him along the way.
Anyone who criticizes Obama is labeled racist. They (the Democrats) are restraining everyone from talking they way they want.

So you're saying that Sarah Palin can never be the republican party nominee for President because she has never fought for her country or has never been supposedly tortured? Ergo, NO WOMAN in America can ever become US president unless they've fought for their country and have been tortured. Correct?

Answer:

Domingo, you have just posted the most perfectly anti-white racist statement.

Aren't you quaking in your boots that the racist-police are going to be tracking you down through the Internet?

You need to quit forming your opinions from fictional films and programs.

How do you explain that many white, middle-aged, Southern voters encouraged Colin Powell to run for President on the Republican ticket?

Powell is not only a military hero like McCain, but he's also a man of long and honorable service to the United States...his native country.

Obama has never even been in the military and opposes supporting our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Obama has never proven that he is a native-born US citizen due to the lack of a "vault" birth certificate that is part of a law suit at this very moment and could disqualify him from being President.

Finally, Obama has never objected to the anti-white racism expressed by his minister or his wife.

How can you prove that you are not an anti-white racist because you refuse to vote for McCain and Palin?

Obama's race lurks just below radar

TERESA BURT has voted Democrat all her life, but can't quite explain why she will not be voting for Barack Obama for president on November 4.
"I just don't trust him on certain things. He is just not who I want to run this country," said the mother of two, who is a waitress at a diner in Portsmouth, Ohio. "If I vote, it will be McCain. And I know a lot of Democrats who won't vote for Obama too."
Volunteers at the Obama headquarters two blocks away are convinced of the reason for her vague response: race. They hear it often.
"Some people are openly racist, they use the N-word, they are very clear they don't want to see a black man in the White House," said Jeanette Langford, taking a break from working through her call lists.
"Others aren't even aware that race is what's holding them back from supporting Barack. But what else is it? They never mention issues, it's always things like 'I can't trust him', or 'he is not the right leader for me'. When they talk about not supporting McCain, it's always issues." - See the entire article

I don't agree with Galactic Cannibal saying that America is a particularly racist country. If you look carefully around the world there is much reason to believe that whatever racism there may be in America is normal. I don't say that as an endorsement of racism, but as a statement of fact & comment on the human condition.

I posted a link here a few days about a new scandal concerning Palin. here is another link on it.

http://www.the-peoples-forum.com/cgi-bin/readart.cgi?ArtNum=5754

While mayor of Wasilla she & her husband had a home built without a building permit. As mayor it was her job to oversee the enforcement of the city's laws. and by building a home without a permit she was breaking a law. even if the home was not in Wasilla, there are authorities that issue the building permit. and she did it without a permit.

and not only that it appears there is evidence that some of the people who built the home apparently for free were the same people who worked on that very expensive sports complex she had built for the city with federal money.

here's a woman who calls herself conservative, but she hires a consultant to lobby washington for money. Not even 1% of the mayors in the whole country do that. Yet she did it and got lots of federal money. and apparently built a special relationship with some contractors who also did a side job for her.

Is this why nobody respects conservatives any more?

Oh, I get it now!

* If you grow up in Hawaii , raised by your grandparents, you're 'exotic, different.'

* Grow up in Alaska eating moose burgers, a quintessential American story.

* If your name is Barack you're a radical, unpatriotic Muslim.

* Name your kids Willow, Trig and Track, you're a maverick.

* Graduate from Harvard Law School and you are unstable.

* Attend 5 different small colleges before graduating, you're well grounded.

* If you spend 3 years as a brilliant community organiser, become the first black President of the Harvard Law Review, create a voter registration drive that registers 150,000 new voters, spend 12 years as a Constitutional Law professor, spend 8 years as a State Senator representing a district with over 750,000 people, become chairman of the state Senate's Health and Human Services committee, spend 4 years in the United States Senate representing a state of 13 million people while sponsoring 131 bills and serving on the Foreign Affairs, Environment and Public Works and Veteran's Affairs committees, you don't have any real leadership experience.

* If your total resume is: local weather girl, 4 years on the city council and 6 years as the mayor of a town with less than 7,000 people, 20 months as the governor of a state with only 650,000 people, then you're qualified to become the country's second highest ranking executive.

* If you have been married to the same woman for 19 years while raising 2 daughters, all within Protestant churches, you're not a real Christian.

* If you cheated on your first wife with a rich heiress, and left your disfigured wife and married the heiress the next month, you're a Christian.

* If you teach responsible, age appropriate sex education, including the proper use of birth control, you are eroding the fiber of society.

* If, while governor, you staunchly advocate abstinence only, with no other option in sex education in your state's school system, while your unwed teen daughte

Cont:

* If, while governor, you staunchly advocate abstinence only, with no other option in sex education in your state's school system, while your unwed teen daughter ends up pregnant, you're very responsible.

* If your wife is a Harvard graduate lawyer who gave up a position in a prestigious law firm to work for the betterment of her inner city community, then gave that up to raise a family, your family's values don't represent America's.

* If you're husband is nicknamed 'First Dude', with at least one DWI conviction and no college education, who didn't register to vote until age 25, and once was a member of a group that advocated the secession of Alaska from the USA, your family is extremely admirable.

OK, much clearer now.

Powells record is as disgraceful as McCain's. Where do you get this nonsense from. Do you believe everything you hear on fox tv?
Powell, for your information was the investigating officer who tried to cover up the Mai Lai massacre.
You know when American soldiers attacked a village of women and old men, killing and raping their way from one end to the other.

Powell, who was at a desk job in the US at the time, was flown out to investigate. he gave the unit involved the "All clear" after speaking only to the CO, who was not even present at the incident.

Only the courage of real "American heros" stopped the cover up. Powell never commanded US forces in the field as he was thought of as too risky. He was flashed promoted over many senior officers with much more experience, but maybe they were not prepared to get involved in the kind of dreadfull activities that Powell was.

Go to www.consortiumnews.com and click on the article entitled :"Behind Colin powells legend". Face the truth and stop this stupid stars and stripes rhetoric.

#39 The election has not been held yet.Election by Media is a popular pastime.Perhaps the X-Factor campaign of smoke and mirrors may not turn out the way folk expect. It would not be a first time when someone had a seemingly un-assailable lead in polls which didn't turn into votes. They only see the 'Charismatic Messiah Obama' like many gullible posters here. Just wait and see if he is elected. Like all the host of Socialists who voted in Nu-Labour, the same socialist ilk which is allowing rampant Islamism in UK.The same as those who so stridently supported the formation of Zimbabwe! McCain has a lot of back-peddling to do because he is a lame-duck old man with old ideas and keeps harping on his war record. GET OVER IT!

Obama is the man of the moment and, when elected, will restore America to its former place as a trading partner to be reckoned with and on a sound financial basis.

Sarah Palin will be cast on the scrapheap of the useless and witless.

I believe that many people are not aware of the percentage of 'black' blood Obama has, I sure wasn't aware of that. It's the perception people have of him simply because he looks more like a black man than the 'black' blood percentage would seem to portray. There still seems to be some deep hatred in America by some Americans toward the black population, why that is I haven't a clue.
I have never resided in the US, have visited there but not enough to find out why racism still seems to exist at the level that it does. I did find that the typical older generation was less tolerant than the younger generation, but that is just something I noticed, it may not be the case at all.

I have family living in the US and the majority of racism comes from black people and race baiters from the black leadership who want to continue racial divides. It’s a calling for some to continue racism. Blacks have more opportunity than any other race in the US yet cry racism while new minority black immigrants exceed.

"Silent Majority?" I remember this term back in the Spiro Agnew days. To me it meant an undereducated group that had no real sense of what to believe, who to vote for, SILENT because they "really didn't think all that much!"

I LOVED your comment "the silent majority is a well educated RETRAINED group of people."

"RETRAINED" - as in restructured thought, brainwashed, what ? VERY FUNNY ! I'm sure this was a typo, but it was a real hoot, nonetheless.

The McCain people have had a lot of bad things to say about this group called ACORN. They've said that Obama's association with ACORN makes him unacceptable. Here's a link showing that McCain also associates with ACORN.

http://www.bradblog.com/?p=6508

The other associatin that Obama is said to have against him is his relationship with this Bill Ayers fellow. But Obama was about 7-years old when Ayers committed crimes. Ayers did serve his legal penalty and then became a prominent person in Chicago devoting himself to education. When Obama sat in Ayers' living room at a fund-raiser he says he was not aware of Ayers' criminal past. Obama associated with the charity Ayers made for education. But many republicans also associated with that group and then later endorsed McCain or gave financial donations to McCain. Here's a link on that.

http://www.the-peoples-forum.com/cgi-bin/readart.cgi?ArtNum=5619

I think the McCain campaign could've found more persuasive arguments to focus on.

When he was very young he arranged for some property crimes to be done as a protest against the vietnam war. regarding all this racism controversy on this thread - in my opinion there are very few of the whites who will let Obama's race influence them in the vote. and I don't think that the blacks who support Obama by over 90% are doing so because of race either. Remember, about 90% of the black population supports the Democrat candidates in all elections. so the blacks associate with a particular politics and many of the whites oppose that type of politics. it may appear to be racially motivated, but is not necessarilly so.

I don't agree with Galactic Cannibal's view that we shouldn't even speak different labels for different ethnic groups such as white or black or african-american. People of different ethnic groups do sometimes prefer to congregate among themselves and not mix. Not only that the different groups tend to have different properties or characteristics and some of these differences may be due to culture, collective experience and even to genetics.

The term 'racism' was invented in the 1930's for political reasons. The phenomenon of racism occurs all over the world and among all racial groups. In America there has been a particular zeal among some to build the world's greatest nation that would overcome all human failures. While the Americans have failed in this quest, I honestly don't think there's a multi-racial nation anywhere in the world that has done better at coping with racism than America has.

Also, I see no reason for a pogram against racism in an era when the real problem is that we're ruled by a mercantile clique that is against all of us outside that clique regardless of race.

How can you defend Ayers? You constantly post favorite links to support your views, but you have neglected to post anything about Ayers and his wife.

Ayers' background is well-documented by entering on Google the name Bernardine Rae Dohrn...the wife of Ayers.

Wikipedia amply relates some of Dohrn's and Ayers' most notorious criminal activities.

Dohrn went to Cuba in July of 1969 where she met with government representatives of North Vietnam and Cuba...showing her support of their communistic regimes.

Dohrn is an admitted Communist and actively plotted the violent overthrow of the US government.

Everyone knew Dohrn as "The Bomber."

Ayers and Dohrn were close friends with radical and violent black groups such as the Black Panthers.

Wally, you can save your sympathy for Ayers and Dohrn and their professional "careers". Dohrn is an adjunct professor of law at North Western University School of Law where she is able to groom law students to her radical and communistic ideas.

John McCain will be bringing up Ayers at the Wednesday night debate.

Let's watch Obama use his snake-oil sales pitch to smooth over and avoid answering any of McCain's questions about Obama's connection with known Communists and radical traitors.

Every sensible American voter wants McCain to pin down Obama and make him answer the questions about himself and his shady background.

American voters are becoming increasingly angry about the heavy-handed tactics of the liberal news media. If violence breaks out it will probably be someone going after the inflammatory, race-baiting news commentators.

Voters need to do their homework before the debate and to make up their own minds as to who is telling the truth and who is trying to hoodwink Americans by simply refusing to answer the questions.

Virginian, I read the other day you criticizing Obama because he may support a policy of protecting jobs from foreign trade. I think there is much confusion about trade and would like to address this.

The ideal of 'free trade' has a lot of merit, but national governments should always be able to veto trade arrangements and seek trade understandings that benefit their nations. It is proper that national leaders do protect the interests of their people. We are losing that tradition in today's world. National sovereignty is being over-ruled by the arrogant assertions of global business interests.

But the ideal of free trade depends completely on having honest currency valuations. Honest currency valuations mean that when a country cannot export roughly what it imports, then their currency should fall in value to bring about parity between exports & imports. When one nation's currency is held artificially high in value despite a very large trade deficit, then that is not free trade. So, we do not have free trade today as the US dollar is maintained at an artificially high level and much manipulation occurs to flush excess US dollars back to the US in the form of lending or investment simply to close the trade deficit.

The other misconception I'd like to clear up is that it is not always in people's interest to use free trade policies.

Consider that after the US civil war the US imposed high tariffs in order to squash free trade. And it is behind this wall of protectionism that enabled the US to become powerful. US citizens benefited from this.

Consider that in the post-WW2 period things were arranged in trade policy to shelter Japanese companies while they exported to the US with low tariffs, but US producers did not have that same ability to export to Japan with similar low tariffs. Consider that in post-1980 China has received similar treatment and it has made China strong. Prior to the mid-1990's there was outright favoritism to the Chin
65

Wally,

By The Rivers Of Babylon (USA) 14/10/2008 19:31:38
Prior to the mid-1990's there was outright favoritism to the Chinese producers who could export to the US on favorable terms, but US producers did not have the same favorable terms in exporting to China. And then in the mid-1990's the currency peg came into being where the Chinese currency was fixed artificially low to the US dollar. And since 2005 while this peg policy has been modified it has the same effect. The currency peg is a huge advantage built into the system for China and this enables China to dominate manufacturing globally.

Honduras & other countries should not be told by the global powers that it must destroy its domestic agriculture or else not participate in foreign trade. the leaders of Honduras should be able to support their agriculture industry and protect it if they so choose. The same principal applies to any other nation. Global organizations like the WTO, IMF, World Bank, NAFTA, CAFTA, etc etc that are loyal to big corporations behind them and not loyal to any nation should not be able to dictate trade policy to national governments.

It is not in our interest as a nation to continue with the insane global trade arrangements we have now. It produces massive debts for us that cannot be paid and will only lead to the loss of our control over our nation.

The global trade regime we have now is only causing a race to the bottom on wages for many people. It is focusing economic development on a few nations and many are suffering as a result.

I can understand your frustration regarding the lack of attention the Ayers fellow is receiving by the general public. I believe that this story is simply overwhelmed by the realities of the last eight years, the immoral/illegal war, the bankrupting of our nation, the socialist bailout of the rich, etc.

In short, very few people care about a two-bit
"terrorist-wanna-be" who called his targets ahead of time so no one would be hurt - FORTY YEARS AGO !

The acknowledged misdeeds of the Bush administration so far eclipse the flimsy Ayres story that few people really give a rat's ass who he was, who he is, etc.

Can't blame the "media" for this - not when we can access EVERY POSSIBLE POINT OF VIEW via the web.

Quote: "Virginian, I don't really fear the people who openly called themselves communist. I don't think they've ever really harmed us."

Answer:

If communistic anarchists such as Ayers and Dohrn have not "ever really harmed us" it is only because of the great effort, expense and sacrifice of those people devoted to protecting our nation.

Wally, you are saying that you are a "fellow-traveller" of those who would destroy the security and freedoms of the United States.

If you truly believe that atheistic Communism is no danger to the survival of the US as a free country you are deluded at best and a traitor-at-heart at worst.

This explains why you are so opposed to McCain and Palin because they want the US to remain free and secure.

You support Obama and Biden because you think that socialism/communism is the wave of the future.

At least everyone knows where you stand now.

Re: "Spread the Wealth"

If you saw the clip with Obama and the "plumber,"
( who knows who he really was ) the plumber said that he was buying a business for $250,000. and was concerned that he was going to be taxed at a higher rate. We can assume that he would also have employees ( subject to Obama's proposed $3000. per employee tax CREDIT ) and that he himself hoped to be making a goodly salary.

My take on this encounter was that Obama estimated that this guy would be personally making over $250,000./year himself ( based on the price of the business) and suggested that he would be one of those who would be tapped for a little extra each year.

If his salary was UNDER $250,000. there would be NO ADDITIONAL TAX under Obama's proposal.

Does this sound unfair ?

I personally would be thrilled to make HALF of the $250,000. in question - the rest would be gravy.

This "plumber" was not the guy who comes to fix the toilet, but the guy who sits at a desk and dispaches his employees to their job locations each morning.

Otherwise, what one-man plumbing business is worth $250,000. ?

I have a suspicion that this guy was a "plant," since the $250,000. figure was EXACTLY on the magic number in question, the lowest number closest to the "working class" income they could conjure up, not the super-rich category that average folks would not relate to.

We all have reason to fear the corporate-socialist takover of our financial system last week and it's continuation at this very moment.

The problem is, this is not the type of socialism that provides social security checks, unemployment benefits, disability payments, health care, educational funding, etc., but the kind that only goes to the rich, the people who KNEW of the risks they were taking with these mortgages and derivatives and
simply kept the game running, the profits flowing until the game collapsed under it's own weight.

And some of us fear "socialists and communists?"
This is 2008, remember ?

The dirty deed is done, right under our noses.
A crisis was concocted and our money was sucked dry to reward CORPORATE DOMESTIC TERRORISTS.

Consider this the MOST MASSIVE TAX the world has ever seen ! Just LOOK at the destruction to our entire system ! How does this in any way compare to anything
we have ever seen ? We will NEVER get out from under this for the rest of our lives.
