Paatelainen feels heat during Hibs' summer of discontent

ELIMINATED in weak fashion from Europe and then crushed 6-0 in full view of the nation. This does not sound like the prescription for a peaceful summer, and so it has proved for Mixu Paatelainen.
The Finn is not the first manager to have been met by calls for his resignation after a defeat by Barcelona. But usually it is the person occupying the Real Madrid hot-seat who learns that coming off worst against the Catalan side is simply not acceptable. Paatelainen awoke yesterday morning to the news that he is already being targeted by some Hibs fans, for whom a thrashing against Barcelona won't do.

In truth, the grumbling was heard last season, as Hibs dropped to sixth in the league after a late flurry of red cards, though not form. Paatelainen, who replaced John Collins as manager only seven months ago, is still struggling to impose his will on the Hibs team, and cut a frustrated figure on Thursday night. Even he could not be pacified by a reminder that it was Barcelona, not Brechin, his team had toiled against. He said he had felt "lonely" on the sidelines, and the comment perhaps revealed he is aware of the dissatisfaction in the stands. There have been few glimpses of encouragement of late for Hibs fans, many of whom anticipate a long season ahead.

Thursday night's 6-0 win for Barcelona against Hibs did indeed prove one thing – they are operating at a level far, far above the Easter Road team. But it was still possible to pass some sort of judgment on Hibs. They looked disorganised in defence and out-of-touch up front. But it is pointless to think this game reflected the true state of the nation at Easter Road at present, and the elimination from the Intertoto Cup against Elfsborg offered another possibly misleading reading. The Swedes were a decent side and in the midst of their league season, while Hibs were simply getting back into the groove. Judging from the display at Murrayfield, this is still some way off, though Paatelainen promised that everything will be alright when the league campaign begins next month.

"People can start judging us on August 9th," added Dean Shiels on Thursday night, and Paatelainen will be aware that this is when it will begin to get serious for him. He will hope to have added to the squad by then, with a striker and creative midfield player the most glaring additions required. Even against Barcelona it was obvious that more cutting edge is needed. A missed open-goal is a missed open-goal whether the opponents are Barcelona or East Stirlingshire. Steven Fletcher could not look to use the stellar opponents to excuse his aberration in the second-half, although he did look to have already picked up a knock. The real testing grounds are to come, with Kilmarnock to be faced on the opening day.

Paatelainen will need to show more tactical acumen than when allowing the young Paul Hanlon to be pushed to the extremes, both in a mental as well as physical sense on Thursday. The young left-back experienced a torrid time and was only saved by the half-time substitution of Lionel Messi, his chief tormentor. It might have been wiser – as well as more kind – to have deployed the experienced Ian Murray at left- back, with Messi's wiles hardly a secret.

There is some good news for Hibs, however. Gerard Pique has given Fletcher a ringing endorsement. The former Manchester United centre-half, who was up against Fletcher on Thursday, believes the striker can make the grade in La Liga, with Real Madrid reported to be interested in the 21-year-old. However, Pique advised Fletcher to remain with Hibs for the foreseeable future in order to complete his footballing education.

"I met Steven Fletcher at the Under 19s European Championship final, when Scotland played Spain, and he is a very good player," he said. "

I think he can make the step up to La Liga but for the moment I think he has to stay and play in Scotland longer and learn more about his game. After that, he can definitely go to La Liga and succeed."

"a striker and a creative midfielder the most glaring additions required".

A striker? Probably true although in purely numerical terms Hibs have actually got plenty, someone would have to be offloaded first.

A creative midfielder however? We already have zemmama and Sheils who both want to play the 'free' and 'creative' role with Yantorno a likely addition. What we need are more solid, deep-lying midfielders with the ability to both break up opposition attacks and link our defence to our offensive, creative players. (like the four or five we have sold/decided to leave over the last 2 years)

Some new defenders wouldn't hurt, oh and a new goalie. So basically, yes, I think the two areas identified in the aricle are the areas we need strengthening least.

No need for any panic yet, still ages until the window closes but a couple of signings for both Hearts and Hibs could see a fairly decent season ahead for us both. Bit early to be calling for mixus head after all what does he have to work with in a short time, not much if scraps. Can only judge him at the end of this season as same goes for Csaba and he is in his honeymoon period for the first season but already he has us back on a steady footing. Can't wait to get underway for real the end of season break should only last two weeks.

2. Sensible Jambo poster shock, the EEN should run a headline!!

Everything clicked for Barca on the night. I think if we played them again at ER in a fortnight it would be far far tighter. But Hibs showed Barca way way too much respect, you can't play a team with that quality and allow them so much space and time. That said, very weak display, altho I take cheet from the second half when we created two excellent opportunities to score and only lost two counter attack goals.

5. Mate, not so, and Hibs didn't even get into first gear. Granted Barca was the main reason, but they played like it was a friendly, no bite or agression. 6-0 is not the true gulf IMO, let's not forget Rangers got a draw at Ibrox verses this team, Hibs won at Ibrox last year...when have hearts won at Ibrox in recent memory? 1993 or something? Glaoting Jambo's need a reality check. If Hibs had playd with five at the back like Hearts and Rangers last year vs Barca it would have been much tighter.

When I was 15 years old, I used to work picking raspberries during the school holidays. We put them in containers called punnets. Strikes me that these containers were more use than the hollow comments of Rangers fan 'thepundit'. No, we don't trust you and see from your normally worthless comments every day that you are just an attention seeker.

Your comments here are disrespectful to both Hibs and Barcelona. Hibs were no match for Barca on the night, but, especially in the first half when Messi was on the field, they were really trying to impress.

FOR PUNDIT & OTHER GERS FANS (from Sportinglife.com)

It was clear to most that Smith needed to make addressing the midfield area a priority after his side ended the season with just the Scottish and CIS Cups to show for their efforts.

Even with Steven Davis, who has gone back to Fulham, and Barry Ferguson, ruled out for three months with injury, Rangers lacked a player who could open up defences or who could get beyond the strikers and provide a goalscoring threat.

So when the club parted with the best part of £7million to bring in strikers Kyle Lafferty, Kenny Miller and Andrius Velicka, Ibrox fans must have thought Sir David Murray had given Smith a blank cheque to overhaul his squad.

But that has turned out not to be the case.

Defenders Christian Dailly and Andy Webster have been handed new deals which raised eyebrows in some quarters, while Davie Weir will also stay on for another year.

But as yet, the midfield issue remains unaddressed and Kaunas must believe they will never have a better chance of beating Rangers and making it to the Champions League third qualifying round.

Yes, the Lithuanians should be comfortably beaten, but Smith is surely taking an unnecessary risk here.

Even Rangers' strongest midfield was dominated on numerous occasions in Europe and in the SPL last season, although results in the main masked this. Eventually they will be caught out.

Having spent what now appears to be the bulk of his transfer budget on three strikers to supplement Kris Boyd, Jean-Claude Darcheville, Daniel Cousin and Nacho Novo, when only one is likely to start in the big games, fans have every right to wonder what on earth is going through Smith's mind.

Smith will be under pressure very early if the midfield is unable to deliver.

Bermuda Hibby,

Let's get real here. Hibs have lost some half decent players in the last 12 months and have been struggling ever since. The team stepped up a gear when MP came in, but that effort has waned and the true Hibs team are now exposed for what they are worth.....very little. We have invested very little in quality replacements and the coming season offers little optimism. False overtures of a new stand (why????) and new players.....tempered with comments of escalating construction material costs and 'we won't release players until we have replacements' all add up to a season of disappointment. I don't deny that we have been managed very prudently from a fiscal point of view, but there comes a time when you must perform in your own market place or be swallowed by the competition. We are like a lot of the old dot.com businesses that had great book value, but no substance.....nothing to sell. Petrie et al must reinvest now and wake up to the reality of the football world which doesn't always sit comfortably beside the financial one.

Mixu will leave Easter Rd by Christmas and will probably be heading to fill the vacant managers position at Ibrox.

Watty will chuck once Kaunas aka Hertz reserves gub them and they fall way behind the Champions in the title race.

Two wee meaningless trinkets last season will not be enough to keep Watty in a job, but I bet Watty leaves citing health reasons.

THE ANERLEY HIBBY,

Bermuda Hibby , you are spot on ....
I think its been pretty evident for nearly six months that the club have been going backwards fast ! Whether Mixu is the man to take us forward who knows , I like him as a man but like most people the jury is still out as to the long term . What bothers me more than anything is how out of touch the board are not only with reality but with the lifeblood ( the fans ) . Did they really think they could more or less fill Murrayfield after selling all our best players & buying dross , taking 2 points from our last 6 games & missing out on Uefa cup spot , no announcement of our new stand yet & no investment in the playing pool ? I mean what planet are these guys on ? All the feel good stuff from the last 3/4 years will fast disappear if the club don't get their act together fast . The gods have been kind in our first few games for the next season but will the current Hibs team take advantage , after Thursday night I doubt it . Our defence is an absolute shambles & as solid as a spunge ! I feel really sorry for Mcneil but I really don't think he's good enough but he's obviously not the only one in that team . Bar Fletcher , Zemmama , Shiels , Benji ( why don't we play him ? ) Murray & possibly Stevenson I get shot of the rest of them ...
The defending against Barca was truly appalling & almost school boy stuff . Granted they are an awesome team & have the best player in the world in Messi but 0-6 at home is totally unacceptable ...
The next season could be a watershed in more ways than one . Steve Lovell , is that the height of our ambition or is it yet another penny pinching board decision ?
The sad thing is & we all know it , Hibs had they kept a hold of their key players & signed a decent goalie 2/3 seasons ago could have split the OF there is no doubt about that .
Petrie / Farmer you just can't carry on like this selling almost a whole team in the space of 18 months , its an absolute scandal ...

Whittaker, Murphy, Brown, Thomson, Sproule, Killen, O'Connor, Riorden = £12.0 million. Deduct Makalambay, O'Brien,Nish, Rankin and other compensation fees of £1.0 = a net £11.0 million. Spend £4.0 million on the training centre leaves £7.0 million, maybe 70% of a replacement stand. But a weak team!! Lets get it sorted Hibs. Either sign decent players r lets start again and play the youngsters who will develop.
20

Private Pike,

#20 Agree mostly with everything you say. To be practical in the short term, we aso need Jones as we are even worse without him. AOB has also begun to show that he can be a player so I would keep him.

Unfortunately Mixu seems determined to off-load Benji and if he does I think that would confirm, to me at least, that he is not a manager.

You'd better be careful though. You didn't include Hogg in the list of your retained players and, as the Hogglovers will tell you, he is Hibs player of the season and a true Hibs legend in the making. Best of all, he will never leave because, almost uniquely among the players that started at the same time as him, we have not had one expression of interest from another club. Anyway he was superb against Barcelona, once he sold the 1st goal and flicked another past our keeper he very cleverly kept himself out of harms way until he was substituted.

Love it at night and during the day. All that green is simply great.

However you do give me concern as you sound like you like the Heath for other reasons. Is it an old haunt of yours when you were living in Centrepoint Soho?

I know you struggle to shake off your smalltown mentality, but you can come out in this day and age. However, whether you stay a closet or come out will not change the fact that you are a muppetheid who knows little about football or anything else for that matter.

22

Harpy,

In the doldrums 26/07/2008 10:58:04
What we need most is sensible investment in the playing side, to shleve this white elephant of an East Stand development and I'm sad to say appoint an experienced manager to replace Mixu.

The big man was a great player for us and I have a great respect for him but unfortunately he is tactically one dimensional and cannot organise the defence, midfield, attack to play as a cohesive unit. This is not based on this pre season but having watched the team last season as well.

The rumours already abound that Mixu handed in his resignation to the board when they were unable (or more likely unwilling) to bring in his initial list of players to the club. He was apparantly persuaded to stay but imo with every interview his body language and downbeat manner betray his feelings that he is not going to be here much longer...Ijust don't think he can see any way he can improve things with the utter dross we are left with at ER.

Sauzee, Collins and now Mixu...three club legends who's reputations have been tarnished by the board (or Petrie lets be honest). Time to stop appointing ex-players and get someone in who has no qualms about telling the board where to shove their derisory wage structures and is more experienced in handling a team that needs completely re-building...thatis not a job for a novice manager such as Mixu I'm afraid.

Rumour has it that Mixu has already put his resignation in some weeks ago because Petrie wasnt coming up with any funds. Apparently he was talked into withdrawing it with promises that he could have money but not until August, after Rod closed the financials for the year to July...totally shocking state of affairs if true.

#21 then we will be playing your mob 4 times this season then!

Barcelona gave 100% in the first half which is why Hibs were made to look what we are, an average SPL side. Had a good laugh when E'to and Hleb came on while we brought on Morais and Rankin.

Friendlies mean nothing. The real tests begin away to Killie on August 9th.

Silence of the Yams consolidates the Hibs obsession - compare everything they do to what the Hearts do! To suggest that Hearts defended against Barcelona out of choice demonstrates his complete lack of any perspective at all. EVERY team has to defend against Barcelona - some, however, do it better than others and pop in the odd goal in response! Just why Hibs took on this fixture, when they are so obviously ill-equipped to do so, is the question every fan should be asking. I suspect that the "anything you can do we can do better" syndrome has caught them out again! Clearly, we at Hearts , are lucky in that we have a better "dictator" than Hibs. How long before the demonstrations start for Mixu to go? How long before the demonstrations start for Petrie to go?

I have been a Hibs supporter for forty years, yes forty, and I have never been as ashamed of a team as the team we have now. They are an embarrassment to all who have worn the green and white in the past. I have just read the posting on the Hibs site “Shields a stupid experience” and I never thought I would ever hear a Hibs player say the things he said…….It was Quite a tough game….. it was quite stupid to be honest with you…….. No , you are quite stupid to think you should be playing football and say you are representing a team that has had a proud history since 1875. 6-Nil at “home” is not a stupid result; it is one of the worst results in the history of a once proud club. Remember the “Famous Five” you are now the “Infamous Six”.

This was a business venture by the board of directors. (As was the Intertoto)
We were not prepared...................end of!
To intentionally or unintentionally have your business confronted with abject defeat and NO rewards (goals), is a complete failure.
Absolutely disgusted.
Watched and followed Hibs since 1950 and have never ever felt embarrassed, until now.
STF saved us, but what for?
Where is the pride in Leith after this debacle?
This board must answer the questions being asked of them.
Do you want Hibs to survive?
Are you only happy with a stadium that MAY serve Scotland's need in future cup ventures?
Have you no pride in the history of the club you represent?

Your comments on the fiscal prudency v. successful product are absolutely spot on. The switch of focus and direction at the club has taken no account whatsoever of the (til now) unswerving loyalty of the majority of fans, and I find it a real insult to expect these fans to turn up and pay good bucks and be treated to, undoubtedly, the consistently worst football I've seen Hibs play in 40 years.
On another issue, no less relevant, Mixu simply can't cut it. He has no man-management skills, no tactical awareness, on ability to instil disciplne, and I suspect is unable to deal with management at board level.
I wish him all good fortune back in Finland.
He may consider taking Rob Jones, and a host of other non-entities with him..
