Date with history: Greyfriars Bobby is big box office at premiere

GREYFRIARS Bobby had a busy day in the Capital after attending the world premiere of the Greyfriars Bobby film at the Caley Cinema on Lothian Road, on July 17, 1961.

The Skye Terrier, who plays Bobby in the film, cheerfully submitted to being petted and fussed over by children and scores of pretty women at the premiere. Earlier in the day, he opened the Greyfriars Bobby Cocktail Bar on Candlemaker Row.

It was his job to break the tape held across the entrance, and a sweet was tied to the centre of the tape to entice him. Although he didn't manage to break the tape, the bar was deemed open anyway.
