Published Date: 24 September 2008
THERE was to be no repeat of Airdrie United's giant-killing exploits at Hearts last month as Dundee United cruised past them and into the last eight of the Co-operative Insurance Cup after a one-sided tie.
Stout defending at Tynecastle had seen Kenny Black's side progress to this stage via a penalty shoot-out, but against United they were down and out by half-time. Goals from David Goodwillie – only in the side because of injuries and the imminent birth of Jon Daly's first child – and Scott Robertson put United on easy street.

After a slow start United created the first good opening on 13 minutes when Morgaro Gomis pounced on a loose ball 30 yards from the Airdrie goal. The Frenchman fed Scott Robertson and when his shot was blocked, the ball fell to Francisco Sandaza who could only prod the ball well wide of the post.

United seemed to take encouragement from that and within a couple of minutes winger Craig Conway was firing in a low effort from 25 yards, though it too failed to find the target by a yard or so.

A robust challenge from Stephen McKenna on Gomis in the same area of the park in the 22nd minute handed United their next opportunity. Conway stepped up and struck the resulting free kick well, but Airdrie goalkeeper Stephen Robertson had positioned himself perfectly and made a confident save.

A goal had to come and it duly did in the 32nd minutes, though not before Robertson had performed near heroics. Paul Dixon, making his first appearance since crossing the road from Dundee in the summer, whipped in a cross and Lee Wilkie powered a header goalwards that Robertson dived low to block, but the ball popped up invitingly for Goodwillie to head home.

It was the 19-year-old's third goal of the competition and he almost made it four shortly after. Fed by a fine Scott Robertson pass, he picked his shot from 12 yards only to be denied by another superb Robertson stop.

At the other end home 'keeper Lukasz Zaluska showed what he could do eight minutes from the break with a fine save from Joe Cardle's header.

Craig Levein's side then went two ahead three minutes before the break with Scott Robertson curling a fantastic shot around the goalkeeper from 20 yards.

It continued to be one-way traffic in the second half and all that was lacking from United was the finishing touch they'd shown in the first period. With 22 minutes left, Gomis shot just wide from the edge of the area and near the end Dixon cut in from the right and skimmed the top of the bar from well out.

Dundee United: Zaluska, Dillon, Wilkie, Dods, Dixon, S Robertson, D Robertson (McCord 88), Conway (Swanson 79), Gomis, Sandaza (O'Donovan 68), Goodwillie. Subs not used: McGovern, Grainger.

Airdrie United: Robertson, Smyth, Smith (Noble 62), McKenna, Donnelly, Nixon, Cardle (Maguire 77), McLaughlin, Di Giacomo, Brown, McDougall. Subs not used: Hazley, Brady, Hollis.

Another clean sheet - two in a row - and a good debut for Dixon, by all accounts. Things are starting to come together after an untidy start to the season.

The future is bright - the future is tanglevein!

Certainly it would appear that the Robertson & now the Dixon acquisitions are appearing shrewd & that the lads were like Big Lee always shedded oot of their nut!

Great to see young Goodie bagging another w/ all the competition up front.

The question now is how do heralded loan signings O'Donovan & Feeney get back in the side when we have Daly, Goodie & Sandaza currently on song?

O'donovan and Feeney will score...Feeney leads the line well and O'dono has pace....but it is great to have Goodwillie and Daly looking for places as well....our problems may lie in central defense...

It's SOFTRBC, the guy who pulled me up for two spelling mistakes in the same post where he managed to spell some basic words incorrectly. Thought a stickler for spelling and grammer (on a forum FFS?) would have been straight back on to apologise for such a poor show and offer a guarantee that it 'will not happen again'..? I was surprised that was the last we seen of you that day:-)

Still, I may be a dumb weegie, but I think that if i try hard, I might just be able to spell 'Ha ha hah ha ..Yah Plonker!' correctly.

Still, if I haven't, then I'm sure you're pedantic enough to put me straight. Afterall, spelling and grammer seem to be important to you!

Not the 37 nil i had hoped for, but i'll still keep my fingers crossed that Airdrie go to the wall again!

Still, I may be a dumb weegie (CORRECT; ABOUT TIME), but I think that if i (MISTAKE) try hard, I might just be able to spell 'Ha ha hah (MISTAKE) ha ..Yah Plonker!' correctly.

"... you're pedantic enough" = "you can write in English". What an unusual concept.

Don't you have some shelves to stack at Asda, sonny? You would be better off doing that than making an utter fool of yourself here.

Again.

6 - Mr angry, or SFABIC or whatever I feel like calling you...thanks again for correcting my spelling and grammer or perhaps you should thank me for giving you the opportunity to indulge in your very own obsession.

But it's a sad day when all you can confound a fellow poster with is his/her spelling. I suppose it's slim pickin's for the supporters of the diddy teams.

What is there to be angry about? Your drivel is pathetic and laughable.

This is a thread to discuss a football match. My initial post did that. You have now posted twice on subjects entirely unrelated to the match in question, or even football in general.

There's only one person "indulging in an obsession" here, and that would appear to be you indulging in your obsession with me.

I won't bother correcting the multitude of errors in your last post, because it is blatantly obvious that I would be wasting my time. Silk purses, sows' ears and all that. Although you shouldn't use big words like "confound" if you don't know what they mean.

Another example of a typical Old Firm tw*t, the likes of whom we hear far too much from in this broadsheet newspaper. Toddle off back to the weegie red top tabloids that are aimed at a population of limited intelligence. You'll enjoy the pictures, and there's usually a cartoon page too.

STFBRCT,

Not sure what there is to be angry about, but nontheless, you are undoubtedly very angry. It can't be because I finally caught up with you after you made a plonker of yourself a few weeks back (See my post 4) because, as I remember, you were raging then too and no provocation was given - you merely came on to sling abuse - ironically enough, without discussing the football match that had taken place. When you were roundly castigated as being a "sad juanker who really needs to get a life", you resorted to the only weapon you had left...'correcting other peoples spelling errors' (while at the same time making plenty yourself..chortle..).

Now, if you think that "confound" is a 'big word', that the Hootsman offers quality journalism and that even though you try your best to make posts without spelling or grammatical errors - while criticising others for theirs - yet still make them, then your not half the smart-a$$ that you seem to think you are. Yes thats correct, theres a few grammatical errors in your posting so far today, but I will leave you to think about that;-) Might I be priveleged with yet another of your ignominous 'Lord Lucans' again today?

But what is really starting to annoy me is the contempt you hold Asda shelf stackers in. Please inform me what the honest job of shelf stacking has done to be held so low in your esteem? And what exactly do you do as a profession?

I asked you last week to point out the "many grammatical errors" in my posts that you continually referred to.

You didn't.

That's because you couldn't.

And there are two reasons for that:

(1) I didn't make any.

(2) You're not intelligent enough to recognise a grammatical error in the first place.

Go on - prove me wrong.

Last week, I was "roundly castigated" by a group of Old firm fans.

I'll let you know when I lose any sleep over that.

You are the umpteenth Old Firm fan who, when confronted by someone of infinitely superior intelligence, has claimed that I am "raging". Is this just some kind of a defence mechanism? Perhaps trying to deflect the attention of other readers away from your own abundant shortcomings? Please do tell.

What do I do as a profession? Why don't you use your amazing telepathic powers to find out? And while you're there, be sure to check and see if I'm still "raging".

10 - Last week you didn't 'ask me to point out the many grammatical errors' in your posts...you didn't even stick around once I pulled you up about making a plonker of yourself (see my post 4) however, if you want me to do it today then:

"... you're pedantic enough" = "you can write in English". What an unusual concept.

"What an unusual concept." Surely an exclamation like such, deserves an exclamation mark, no?
At this point I would delve deeper into your failings but having witnessed what a puh-lonker you come across as for such behaviour, you can understand my reluctance to follow suit!

And, "confronted by superior intelligence"...really? You think that throwing a load of abuse - loosely based on regional stereotypes - while at the same time trying to point-score on spelling errors to make up for the lack of substance in your posts (not to mention making plenty of said spelling errors yourself) demonstrates "superior intelligence"? Thats a serious question, BTW, not a rhetorical one!

On the subject of your profession, its tempting to believe that you are one of the guys at ASDa who unloads the lorries and drags the crates in to storeroom, envious of the shelf stackers and their cushy 'indoors all the time' job. However, the blatant hypocrisy in the way you conduct yourself on here (Spelling errors?) leads me to beleive that you are probably a teacher. After all, 'those that can do; those that can teach'!

Oh, nearly forgot, no need to use my telepthic powers to check if you're still raging; simply reading your post tells me that yes, you are still raging and I doubt if post 11 is going to cool you down much either.

You seem to have a 'rage' problem. You seem to suffer from...well, dare i say it, permarage. Looks like you have a lot more in common (with one half at least) with your OF bretheren;-)

SOFBTRC,

To quote you from post #10:

"...you didn't even stick around once I pulled you up about making a plonker of yourself"

Now I'll direct your attention to the thread you have referred to several times as being indicative of how you "put me in my place":

http://thescotsman.scotsman.com/sport/Split-loyalties-for-Stephen-the.4503317.jp

I'm not sure that further proof is needed with regard to how much tosh you come out with, but that pretty much seals it, doesn't it?

Now I'll leave you to post some more of your drivel, and when I don't bother replying (because it won't be worth replying to), you'll no doubt post again, and again, as is your modus operandi, trying in vain to provoke a response.

Some of the weegies that post here on the wind-up are actually quite good at it, because they're quite intelligent.

You, on the other hand, are not.

I will give you credit, though, for not typing "rageing". Well done.

I stand corrected, you did come back on,no doubt when you felt it was safe to return. However i was in my bed by the time you came back - hours and hours later - with the usual, tired old "weegie, giro, housing estate, soap-phobia" mince you have been pedaling on here for years so I had no idea of your 'fearless' counterattack It really won't become funny or clever no matter how much you persist with it.

I see that in your latest post you have dropped the pretence that you are some sort of grammatical/punctuation expert - breath of fresh air actually - although its quite difficult to run with that one when you don't even have the sense to hit the '?' key upon typing a question.

So, as we have become quite close this afternoon, please indulge me SOAFYBRC, let me attempt some Cognitive Therapy on you and see if I can get to root of the problem with your anger issues and your punctuation-fixation!

Think of the cartoon teacher in Pink Floyd’s The Wall, and hear my voice – it’s a Scottish voice as well – and it’s saying “SOFABLT, if you don’t eat your meat; you cant have any pudding; how can you have your pudding if you don’t eat your meat?” and then it’s saying “you can’t write a question without writing a question mark; if you’re too stupid to write a question mark, how can it be a proper question!…SOFA, why do you always get it wrong, you stupid laddie, you’re an imbecile”…….and then I’m looking inside your head, using my famed ‘telepathic powers’ (according to you) and I’m hearing you scream “aw ..nah, I’m back at school, I’m back to being the idiot of the class, before I bought Eats, shoots and leaves by Lynne Truss – who I masturb@te over every night – and they are all laughing at me again and Maurice Backpass wins yet another silver medal, must we always be losers, must Dundee always be so..well…boring…. must I always be the fat kid they bullied, I hate them, I hate the teacher, I hate the OF, with their thin successful fans argghhhhhh! guhh, g
