SCOTLAND'S triple gold medallist Chris Hoy led the way as Britain's triumphant Olympic team arrived home today.
Edinburgh-born Hoy joined Britain's other medalists on a special British Airways plane which had its nose painted gold.

Britain finished fourth at this summer's Games with 19 gold medals, 13 silver and 15 bronze in the country's most successful Olympics for 100 years.

Hoy said: "It's quite overwhelming really, it's just the most incredible reception.

Cyclist Hoy, who won gold medals in the Keirin and individual and team sprint events, admitted he had not expected such a welcome home as the team were shielded from publicity during their time in the Athletes' Village in Beijing.

"You are living in a bubble in the Village and you never know what's happening at home," Hoy told BBC1.

"I think the nation has got behind the team and it's fantastic.

"If we can build on this and get behind the London 2012 Games it will be great."

Rebecca Adlington, who won two gold medals in swimming, was also taken aback by the reception waiting for the team.

"I never expected this, it's great," she said.

"We've just done our best to get a medal, anything else that comes our way is just a bonus," she told BBC 1.

A gold medalist in the 400m and 800 freestyle, she revealed here plans for the next month.

"I'm getting back (to training) at the end of September," she added.

"I'm having a month off and then getting back in the water.

"I just can't wait to get home and see my family."

Lord Sebastian Coe paid tribute to the British team and the boost their performance had given to the next Olympics in London.

Lord Coe, chairman of the London Organising Committee for the 2012 Games, said: "Team GB have just provided us with the most extraordinary platform."

He told BBC1: "Those guys just performed way beyond what I think any of us were expecting."

Gymnast Louis Smith, who won a bronze medal on the pommel horse, said: "It's a bit crazy, just looking out of the window (of the plane) and looking at everyone."

Heptathlete Kelly Sotherton admitted she had put her own sadness at failing to pick up a medal in Beijing behind her in order to celebrate along with the British winners.

Sotherton said: "It's always good to come back as part of the team. People are upset at how they've performed but you've got to share in everybody's success."

Rower Steve Williams, who won a gold medal as part of the men's four, was elated at the reception given to the British team when their plane landed at Heathrow.

"We were looking out of the windows and everyone at Heathrow was waving flags," he said.

Teenage diver Tom Daley revealed he planned to return to training after some time off to rest after the Olympics.

He said: "It's just been great, it really has.

"I think I'm going to have a few days off. Then I will be back to hard training."

Again I congratulate Chris Hoy.

On the BBC website there is a photograph of Gordon Brown and Tessa Jowell walking to the plane on the runway to welcome home the Olympians.

Sad that Mr Brown (or any other minister for that matter( can't be bothered walking the runway of Brize Norton to the RAF planes that bring back the bodies of our dead military. In fact it's a national disgrace.

Chris Hoy you a wonderful ambassador for Scotland and all of the UK.

Thank You

Satire above all,

I have one message for Chris Hoy "SCOTLAND DOES NOT NEED YOUR MEDALS". I am incensed that he has decided to put his tuppenworth into the political debate in Scotland.

Personally, I would prefer a Scotland team to be represented in the Olympics even if couldn't win a single medal than to be attached to a GB team. There were hundreds of proud athletes who participated in the Olymics who didnt win anything but were simply happy to be taking part. Surely that's what the Olympics are all about.

So, Hoy, the sooner you are back in England where you belong the better.

P.S. When we get independence, I for one would be happy if you changed your citizenship to English.

#7 your comments and thoughts of extreme anti Britishness are shameful on all decent minded Scots.

Thank God we have wonderful ambassadors like Chris Hoy. I am so embarressed there are people like you in Scotland spouting your hate.

Another member of the extreme SNP anti British brigade. I'm glad the sacrifices of Britains throughout the world are not being forgotten by mindless morons like you.

Westcoaster,

7 yet again another narrow minded nationalist. Another freeloader whose done nothing with his own life who chooses to blame others for his personal failings and belittle the success of his own people because they don't share the same un educated views of his. And if you think Independence will in some way improve your sad little way of life then if it even happens you will be sadly disappointed.
10

Miss H,

25/08/2008 18:39:39
9 I also regret that this issue has become politicised.

There is no reason why Chris Hoy should not be able to continue to represent the UK even if Scotland becomes independent.

I am sure any Scottish athlete who wanted to could choose to take up UK nationality rather than Scottish nationality if that is how they felt.

The decision on independence has hee haw to do with who joins what team at the Olympics and such matters should be left out of the equation completely.

It really brings home how bad things would turn in an independent Scotland.

Don't speak to me about having a nerve. Did I say Chris Hoy had 'done anything wrong'? He's a youngster who isn't obviously a political person. Is that wrong?

Auch grow up or go and have yer tea.

Jock E,

Chris Hoy is a better Scotsman than any of the rabid contributors to this theme.

Can those people demeaning Chris Hoy please tell me in this column what hardships they have suffered in representing Scotland and what achievements they contributed to this Country?

God help us as a nation if they get control! I despise them. For goodness sake lets's have a grown up conversation about nationhood and our fellow country men and women.

That's my post at #4. The people who have done something very wrong are the Westminster government.

Although, getting back to the thread, I'm sad that not everyone who participated in the Olympics gets the same credit. The medal winners are the stars. I think everyone who took part was a star.

In 'country' do you mean Scotland? If so, along with thousands of others, I spend many hours doing my best to help the forgotten of this country ie the elderly, the less able and the shunned. Volunteers aren't paid but they can have more skills than today's professionals. Mind you we don't get medals and I doubt few would want one. We enjoy giving back a little of what we've had during our lifetimes so far.

The above is not to detract from the achievements of the Olympians in any way, it is an answer to your question.
25

Red Etin,

25/08/2008 19:24:58
I can't see the Norwegians, Swedish and Danish nations giving up their right to an Olympic team just so that "Scandinavia" gets a higher medal count. I admire the Jamaicans who achieve because they have natural ability and work hard to become world class.

Those who post along the lines of "we're too wee", "we cannae dae that", are letting Scotland down. People of vision can see Scotland one day taking its rightful place among the nations of the world in all sporting events. Otherwise we might as well compete as Europe. What is to stop us having a good squad of runners, divers and BMX riders, and synchronised swimmers for that matter?
26

Rufus T. Firefly,

25/08/2008 19:47:55
#21 Subrosa you did say that Chris Hoy will have wished he had kept his mouth shut.

Why should he? He was asked a question and gave an informed answer.

Just Because it does not fit in with the Natz limited narrow agenda then you would prefer him to be silenced?

Some of the Natz comments which have been directed against Mr Hoy on this website today have been nothing short of disgraceful.
27

Phil C,

#22 Joke "Chris Hoy is a better Scotsman than any of the rabid contributors to this theme."

Thou dost talk sh*te!

Are you calling my comments disgraceful? They certainly are not. Neither are they insulting. I have no narrow agenda, I only wish what that my country is given the chance to rule itself without being forced to rely on a government 650 miles from me and which has no interest in my area whatsoever.

No he didn't give an informed answer. He gave an answer relevant to his own sport.

I believe he's employing Max Clifford as his PR who will guide him to his first million. Good for him and I trust Mr Clifford will instruct him on the fielding of politically based questions from the media.

Satire above all,

I make no apology whatsoever for my view and I am ceratinly not a narrow minded Scot. The fact is, MrHoy is obvioulsy a pro unionist and being so sides with minority view in Scotland. So, if he thionks it s ok to put his head above the parapet then he should expect to take the flak. He is just another who has been bought and sold for English gold...ENGLAND you are welcome to him and his medals.

Or what abou the poll that was conducted in England, which asked the question "Would you like a Scot to be Prime Minister?" Do you think that is in anyway bigoted, or racist perhaps?

Satire above all - You are a very bitter person. So many sad comments here from my fellow Scots.

Hoy your a hero - On this thread some Nationalists on the evidence of this site are starting to embarrass the cause they are supposed to be embody, Scotland.

Well done to all of Team GB immensely proud of you all you represented our country with great honour.

Isn't he in England now playing football?

Surely in the eyes of the Nats he is a traitor or something negative too.

Cheer UP Nats!!

I am from Earth. Its a great place! where people should live in harmony and work towards breaking barriers not building them.

What planet are you on?
44

not read many of the comments above. Lets be honest Hoy is only going to promote a GB team, the Cameraderie amongst the cyclists must be amazing he won't want that to end, he's hardly likely to do anything that might bring it on

Truely English,

What a great star of the Olympics we have in Chris Hoy and if you don't want him in Scotland then he will be more than welcome in England.

In no tome at all, he can fit in just as all the other Scots have done in England. It seems he is British and just too good for the Scots.

Thanks to the unionist/BritNat fundamentalists this is like the return of GB forces from the Falkland's. Jingoism, anyone? Sports people paraded like 'proud' soldiers. Its sick. Is this Gordon Brown's 'war' which he thinks he has won (or rather came in 4th, not that anyone really cares where 'Team GB' ended up)? These sports people are being abused terribly, and they are acting like unthinking poltitical puppets.

Its a well know fact that Mr Hoy wanted to on the Olypic Commisson. He may also even be harbouring some hopes of a knighthood. What better way to promote his ambitions than to come out on the side of the Unionists by uttering a veiled attack on a MSP, while simultaneously promoting the Unionist cause. Perhaps, he is more of a politician than I thought...

Is it so wrong for a country to want to be represented at the Olympic games? Is it so wrong for Scotland to wish to be represented as a free and independent nation state at the Olympic Games? Apparently so. Least that is what Unionists wish to deny Scotland.
