£10,500 fine is not to be sniffed at
More than 200 complaints were lodged by the public about the smell from Greengairs landfill near Airdrie, North Lanarkshire during five months from November 2010.
WRG Waste Services Limited, which operates the site, pled guilty at Airdrie Sheriff Court on Tuesday to failing to comply with a condition of its waste permit.

Hide AdThe Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Sepa) investigated after receiving complaints from the local community and discovered the odours were being caused by the escape of landfill gas.
Jim Clothier, Sepa’s investigating officer, said: “The local communities in the vicinity of the landfill were severely impacted by the activities carried out at WRG Waste Services Limited’s Greengairs site.
“Our records show that between 7 November 2010 and 16 March 2011, over 200 complaints were received from the local community.”
